Metadata ICA • Metadata are data that describe the content, data definition and structural representation, extent (both geographic and temporal), spatial reference, quality, availability, status and administration of a geographic dataset.
Shift in spatial information • In this digital age where cartography and GIS become more integrated and where it is possible to integrate disparate sources of information there seems for the cartographic professions to be a shift from purely cartographic visualisation to the use of spatial data in all its manifestations.
Shift in handling digital spatial information • It seems logical to put the question whether departments which occupy themselves with different kinds of spatial data and their accompanying processes should not integrate or at least force stronger links with the other departments. • This counts as well for the professional societies as for the library and archive map departments.

W A NFoundation Scientific Atlas of The Netherlands • 2nd edition (1984-1990) scanned with texts and metadata from the CCK (appr. 800 maps) • 3rd edition (1999-….) digital, made available by producers (almost all participating in the NCGI) • Integrated in Geoplaza as information-source and visual geographical interface
Who’s to profit? • When this infrastructure and interface can be realised the general public and geographical education programmes will have valuable geographical (meta)information at their disposal. • At the same time producers will have a better advertising opportunity for their more valuable data, which generally must be paid for.
Thank you! Any Questions?
