  1. Banking Regulation of UK and USFinancial MarketsDalvinder Singh, Oxford Brookes University, UK Dalvinder Singh provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the legal aspects of prudential supervision. This gives the reader a broader understanding of the core processes of banking supervision. By using the UK as a case study, a comparison is made with the US to illustrate the different ways of approaching the issues. The author examines the legal as well as the theoretical, economic, political and policy issues that underpin the purpose of prudential supervision, such as corporate governance, enforcement sanctions, the role of external auditors and accountability of financial regulators. These are considered in the context of broad-policy considerations which render prudential supervision necessary, namely financial stability and depositor protection. The book will be of interest to academics, policymakers, regulators and practitioners, and equally will serve specialist undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law, management and economics which focus on financial regulation. 4. The Human Rights Impact of the World Trade Organisation by James Harrison This book examines the impact of international trade rules on the promotion and protection of human rights, and explains why human rights are an important mechanism for assessing the social justice impact of the international trading system. The core of the book is an in depth analysis of the various ways in which international trade law rules impact upon human rights protection and promotion, emphasising the significance of the jurisdictional context in which the human rights issues arise: coercive measures that are taken by one country to protect and promote human rights in another country are distinguished from measures taken by a country to protect and promote the human rights of its own population. The author contends that international trade law rules have utilised certain ad hoc mechanisms to deal with particularly pressing human rights concerns in the trade context, but also argues that these mechanisms do not provide systemic solutions to the inter-linkages between the two legal systems. The author therefore examines mechanisms by which human rights arguments could be more systematically raised and adjudicated upon in WTO dispute settlement proceedings, highlighting future opportunities and difficulties. He concludes by considering broader systemic issues outside the dispute settlement process that need to be addressed if trade law rules are to successfully protect and promote human rights. 5. Die Wirkung des Bundesverfassungsgerichts. Rechtssoziologische Analysen The book analyses the impact of the German Federal Constitutional Court. It develops a theoretical frame that combines the three perspectives of sociolegal effectiveness research, policy-oriented implementation analyses and social science evaluation studies. It applies the theoretical frame in analysing the impact of the German Federal Constitutional Court in its relation to the judiciary and the legislator. Furthermore, it offers a new perspective for judicial research by adopting social systems theory in analysing the German Federal Constitutional Court as an autopoietic organisation of recursive decision-making that establishes specific relationships of structural coupling with the judicial and the political system. 6. The Shape of the New Europe The European Union and European identity were until recently the objects of separate branches of scholarship and inquiry. With the entry of Central and Eastern European members into the EU, it has become clear that the future of the European Union can no longer be considered in isolation from the future of European identity. Taking Jürgen Habermas's plea for a European constitution and a normative foundation for the European Union as its starting point, this volume brings together the ideas of distinguished scholars in philosophy, political science, sociology, history, law and theology in order to address the shifting relationship between constitutionality, political culture, history and collective identity. The book argues that the future shape of Europe will not only result from external processes of globalisation but from the interaction between these social spheres within Europe. 7. French Criminal JusticeAuthor: Professor Jacqueline Hodgson.   Criminal Justice' is a new monograph authored by Professor Jacqueline Hodgson.  Moving away from idealised accounts of judicial investigation and writing from an explicitly comparative perspective, the study examines the ways in which French criminal justice operates in practice and the factors which influence and constrain its development and functioning.  Much of the analysis draws upon professor Hodgson's own empirical study of the investigation and prosecution of crime in France.  'French Criminal Justice' is published by Hart Publishing.  Summaries of the book can be read in English and French. 8. Exploring the Law: The Dynamics of Precedent and Statutory Interpretation A study of the dynamics of precedent and statutory interpretation, portraying such elements as integral and vibrant parts of the law rather than as abstract concepts. Case studies are used to link the mechanics of precedent and statutory interpretation with substantive law. As the authors rightly say, legal teaching is compartmentalised.  An understanding of precedent and statutory interpretation is essential before cases and legislation can be applied to problem situations.  Exploring the Law: The Dynamics of Precedent and Statutory Interpretation provides the bridge for the gap between the law and its application. 9. Human Rights, Plural legalities and Gender realities: Paths are made by walkingAnne Hellum, Julie Stewart, Shaheen Sardar Ali and Amy Tsanga This book addresses a current dilemma in the operationalization of human rights norms at state, regional and international levels, namely the apparent failure to deliver the projected human rights benefits and protections to individuals on the ground. The chapters are drawn from Africa, Europe and Asia and constitute a compilation of micro-level studies which marry gendered understanding about people's local experiences, problems and practices in a continuous dialogue with evolving human rights principles. In sum they constitute a concerted effort to build a responsive human rights approach from below and within.
