Introduction Change detectives was a fun unit that involved doing a lot of experiments to see how the change of a single variable would effect the different reactions in different ways. Some experiments turned from liquid to solid like freezing ice and from solid to liquid like melted chocolate. I enjoyed the unit, because I liked doing all the experiments and making a mess!
Section one: Some of the ingredients used for our mess scene were: A burning candle: was recoverable and was a physical Change. The vinegar: was unrecoverable and was a physical change. The Tubes: were recoverable and were physical change as well. Berocca: was unrecoverable and was a physemical change (both Physical and chemical.) Tartaric acid: was unrecoverable and was a chemical change. Bi-carb Soda: was unrecoverable and was a physemical change. Frozen milk: was recoverable (you wouldn’t want to drink it) and was a physical change.
Mess scene ingredients cont….. Melted chocolate: was recoverable and was a physical change. Burnt chocolate: was unrecoverable (unlike the melted chocolate) and was a physemical change (both physical and chemical)..
Each ingredient changed as the experiment continued, this is how we started some of the experiments……… Burning candle was lit by Mrs. Fraser using a match. The Vinegar was spilt on the smooth surface. The unfrozen tube was placed in the freezer and The frozen tube was left at it’s original state. We dropped the solid Berocca Tablet in the clear liquid, and it started to dissolve. The powdery Tartaric acid was placed into the liquid where it bubbled and dissolved. The bi-carb soda was powdery and acted like the tartaric acid……..
Ingredient list cont……. The milk carton was placed in the freezer until it became Solid. The chocolate was put in the microwave until it became almost a liquid. The burnt chocolate was put in the microwave for too long!! Chocolate... Vinegar Berocca Burnt chocolate Bi-carb
Section two: Now I am going to share our experiments with you… Mess scene observation Evocative Evaporation: Proved how fast evaporation can occur…. Icy Observations: Difference in temperatures and behaviours in different states of tubes….. Delightful dissolving: How fast something can dissolve in different quantities of water.. Candle capers: How candles burn in different situations.. Physical/chemical change: Classifying different ingredients into physical and chemical using a Venn diagram plan… Tablet investigations: How long a berocca lasts in different temperatures of water…..
