  1. Fire extinguisher Training

  2. COURSE TITLE:FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY AWARENESS Venue: Fire /Safety classroom – Fire training ground.Duration : 4 Hours Classroom lesson – Duration – 2 hours Details of training: Self introduction of instructor and participation of the attendees. Introduction of the Subject. Explain the training course objectives. Explain contents of each slides shown on the screen ( hard copy attached). Show movie , fighting fire with fire extinguisher ,duration 20 minutes. Brief discussion about lesson learned from the movie. Break time ( 10 minutes)

  3. COURSE TITLE:FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY AWARENESS (Cont.) Fire training ground – Duration- 2 hours • After asking permission from U&O to utilize the fire training ground, the Fire Technician will: • Connect the 1.5”x100 ft hose line with nozzle from the fire hydrants as stand by. • Fill drip pan size 1.5 sq/m by 6” high with 1/3 water &1/3 fuel (gasoline). • Ignite the fuel using 8 ft long torch. • The instructor will demonstrate how to properly operate and safely use the fire extinguisher (ABC cartridge type) in extinguishing the fire. • Each participant will practically demonstrate, suppressing the fire using the fire extinguisher. • Brief discussion about the used of fire extinguisher( inside classroom). • Fill up course evaluation form ( attached). • Training completed / keep record of attendance.

  4. Fire Extinguisher Awareness Training • Course Objectives: • To Identify different types of fire. • Identify the extinguishing Methods. • Knowing the different types of fire extinguishers & what types of fires it is effective. • Proper Handling and safe use of fire extinguisher in suppressing fire. • Understanding the basic first Response techniques. • Be aware of the capabilities and limitations of fire extinguisher.

  5. EXTINGUISHER D TRAINING

  6. Objectives_______________ • Understand the combustion process and different fire classes. • Understand fire extinguisher types, operating procedures, capabilities, and limitations. • Understand basic firefighting concepts: • R.A.C.E. • P.A.S.S.

  7. The Combustion Process____ THE FIRE TETRAHEDRON OXYGEN HEAT CHAIN REACTION FUEL

  8. Fire Classes _________ ATrash Wood Paper CElectrical Equipment • wood • cloth • paper • rubber • many plastics B Liquids Grease D Combustible Material • gasoline • oil • grease • tar • oil-based paint • Lacquer • flammable gases • magnesium • sodium • potassium • titanium • zirconium • other flammable metals D

  9. Fire Classes (cont.)______ CLASS K FIRES • Recently recognized by NFPA 10 in 1998. • Fires involving combustible vegetable or animal cooking oil and fats in commercial cooking equipment. K Cooking Media

  10. Fire Extinguisher Anatomy____ DISCHARGE LEVER PRESSURE GAUGE (not found on CO2 extinguishers) DISCHARGE LOCKING PIN AND SEAL CARRYING HANDLE DISCHARGE HOSE DATA PLATE DISCHARGE NOZZLE BODY DISCHARGE ORIFICE

  12. Fire Extinguisher Types_____ PRESSURIZED WATER • Class “A” fires only. • 2.5 gal. water at 150-175 psi (up to 1 minute discharge time). • Has pressure gauge to allow visual capacity check. • 30-40 ft. maximum effective range. • Can be started and stopped as necessary. • Extinguishes by cooling burning material below the ignition point.

  13. Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) • Class “B” or “C” fires. • 2.5-100 lb. of CO2 gas at 150-200 psi (8-30 seconds discharge time). • Has NO pressure gauge--capacity verified by weight. • 3-8 ft. maximum effective range. • Extinguishes by smothering burning materials. • Effectiveness decreasesas temperature of burning material increases.

  14. Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) DRY CHEMICAL • Class “B”, or “C” fires. • 30 lb. dry chemical (ammonium phosphate) pressurized with CO2 gas cartridge and wheeled extinguishers are pressurized with nitrogen cartridge. (8-25 seconds discharge time). • 5-20 ft. maximum effective range. • Extinguishes by smothering burning materials. B Liquid, Grease C. Electrical

  15. Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) MULTIPURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL • Class “A”, “B”, or “C” fires. • 20 - 30 lb. dry chemical (mono ammonium phosphate) pressurized with CO2 gas cartridge and wheeled extinguishers are pressurized with nitrogen cartridge. (8-25 seconds discharge time). • 5-20 ft. maximum effective range. • Extinguishes by smothering burning materials.

  16. Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) DRY POWDER • Class “D” combustible metal fires only. • 30 lb. pressurized dry powder optimized for specific combustible metal (also available in bulk containers for hand scooping onto fire to extinguish). • 4-6 ft. maximum effective range. • To activate, must first open CO2 cylinder cartridge on back to pressurize body.(28-30 seconds discharge time) • Extinguishes by smotheringburning materials. COMBUSTIBLE D METALS

  17. A Trash Wood Paper C Electrical Equipment Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) WET CHEMICAL Class “A”, “C”, and “K” fires. 1.5 gal. of stored pressure PRX wet chemical extinguishing agent (40 sec. discharge time). 10-12 ft. maximum effective range. On Class “K” fires, don’t use until after fixed extinguishing system has activated. Extinguishes by cooling and forming foam blanketto prevent reigniting. K Cooking Media

  19. R A C E Fire Emergency Response Rescue Alarm Contain Extinguish

  20. Firefighting DecisionCriteria • Know department emergency procedures and evacuation routes. • Know locations of extinguishers in your area and how to use them. • Alwayssound the alarm regardlessof fire size. • Avoidsmoky conditions. • Ensurearea is evacuated. • Don’tattempt to fight unless: • - Alarm is sounded. • - Fire is smalland contained. • - You have safe egress route (can be reached withoutexposure to fire). • - Available extinguishers are rated for size and type of fire. • If in doubt, evacuate!

  21. P A S S Fighting the Fire_________ Pull the pin Aim low at the base f flames Squeeze the handle Sweep side to side

  22. Summary__________ • Combustion process (Fire Tetrahedron). • Class A, B, C, D, K fires. • Types of portable fire extinguishers: • - Operating procedures. • - Capabilities and limitations. • Basic firefighting concepts: • R.A.C.E. • P.A.S.S.
