  4. Plains Culture • Great Plains- vast grasslands in central and western united states • Highly developed Native Culture (Osage, Iowa, Lakota, Cheyenne…) • Spanish Introduce horse and guns and transforms their culture • Then westward migration forces further change

Bloody Battles • Treaty of Fort Laramie – Sitting Bull only Sioux not to sign • Reservations become problem for hunting culture • Red River War- Kiowa and Comanche • Gold in Black Hills • Custer last Stand – Battle of the Little Bighorn. Led by Sitting Bull • Sitting Bull flees to Canada with his people but starvation forces them back…Joins “Buffalo Bill”

Assimilation • Natives would be accepted if they gave up culture • Dawes Act- Sell properties to Native Americans who wished to become “Americanized”- breaks treaties of reservations. • Destruction of Buffalo • Massacre (Battle) at Wounded Knee- Use of Cannons, starving and Freezing, Ghost Dance Movement, 300 dead in a few minutes

  9. Cattle Ranching • Vaqueros to cowboys • Home stead and Open range • Driving Cattle • 25% Black 12% Mexican • 3 month long drive • Barbed Wire ends Open range. Large impact on Mexican cattle ranchers.
