From Privilege to Pit to palace! Genesis 37-50
The Hardships Of Joseph • He was hated and bullied by his brothers. • He was thrown into a pit. • He was sold into slavery at 17 years old. • He was separated from all of his family. • He was tempted to commit fornication day after day. • Potiphar’s wife lied about him. • He was thrown into prison. • He was forgotten in prison.
Joseph’s Reaction • Joseph could have acted upon impulse. • Fear • Lust • Jealousy • Pride • Vengeance • Blamed God • Rebellion
Example of The Character Of Joseph • And after a time his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, "Lie with me." But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Lo, having me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand; he is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" And although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her. (Genesis 39:7-10 RSV)
Example of The Character Of Joseph • But Joseph said to them, "Fear not, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones." Thus he reassured them and comforted them. (Genesis 50:19-21 RSV)
Guiding Principles Young People Need • Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6 RSV) • "Glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Cor. 6:20). • "Evil company corrupts good habits" (1 Cor. 15:33). • "In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise" (Prov. 10:19). • "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches" (Prov. 22:1).
Guiding Principles Young People Need • "Drink water from your own cistern...and rejoice with the wife of your youth" (Prov. 5:15,18). Cf. Hb. 13:4. • "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also...seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Mt. 6:21,33). • "He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully" (2 Cor. 9:6). • "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom. 8:31).
By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his burial. (Hebrews 11:22 RSV) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 NKJV)
Have You Left Your Guiding Principles? • But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. (Revelation 2:4-5 RSV)
