  3. I. Native Americans • A. On the continent for nearly 30x longer than settlers • B. Literary traditions consisted of oral stories (no written word) • C. Lifestyle differed in language, govt., etc.

  4. II. Puritans and Pilgrims • A. Believed in a model community governed by the Bible • B. Believed in predetermined salvation (John Calvin) • 1. Despite this nothing taken for granted • 2. Need hard work and discipline • 3. Predetrmined grades??? • C. Those who gave up hope separated, known as Pilgrims or Separists
