The Straight line: Lesson Plan Date: 12 September, 2005Time: 10.00 – 10.40Class: Form 4ANo. of Students: 30Subject: MathematicsTopic: Parallel lines (refer to page 19 –CS)
Parallel lines are straight lines that will never intersect each other.
When two straight lines have the same gradient, then they are parallel to each other. For example: The equation of JK is y = 3x – 8 The equation of LM is y = 3x +6 The gradient of JK = 3 The gradient of LM = 3 Since the two lines have the same gradient, therefore JK // LM
Activities:15 minutes • For each of the following, state whether the straight lines are parallel. • (a) y = 3x – 5 (b) y = 1/2x • y = -3x + 5 y = 1/2x +6 • Answer: Answer: • (c) y = 2x -1 (d) y = -2x +9 • y = 3x + 4 y = -2x + 11 • Answer: Answer: yes no yes no
Conclusions ( 2 minutes ) • When two lines are parallel line, they have equations with the same gradient.
