  2. Master Copy Plate • You will create a plate through the drape method. • You will need to bring in a plate to drape. Make sure it is a dinner size plate. Cover with newspaper and press a slab into the plate. • Plate must be removed when the clay is leatherhard. • You will create a relief sculpture and relief carving on the draped plate.

  3. The theme of the plate will be a famous historical figure in the spirit of the artist Judy Chicago. • If this person is from the 20,21st century they must be deceased. • The plate must have at least one large 3D element projecting off. • These must come off the plate at least 2 inches. • The object must relate to the historical figure. • There must be an additional carved element that also relates to this person.

  7. While studying art at UCLA Judy Chicago was motivated by her prominent male history teacher’s claim “ Women’s contributions to European intellectual history? They made none.” • Project took over 10 years to complete. • Worked with a variety of other artists and historians on the piece. • Used “craft media”–porcelain and embroidery-to make a statement about female art production.

  8. Original concept was to have 13 women represented in order to mimic the last supper. • Each place setting contains a porcelain plate, goblet and table runner.

  9. Plates designs are abstract versions of female anatomy, flowers and butterfly motifs.

  10. Women represented are historical figures, artists, writers, rulers, etc.
