BANK ACCOUNT • Advisable to open two accounts: one in Brunei, and one in UK. • In Brunei: open HSBC account (e.g. Headstart) • The HSBC ATM card can be used internationally with a small charge of $4.50 per withdrawal. • You can deposit part of your advance allowance into this account, convert some of it, and change the rest into bank draft • In UK: visit the nearest bank of your preference within your area (egHSBC, Lloyd’s, Barclays, NatWest), bring your passport and acceptance letter, and open a new account.
SUITCASES • Advisable to bring two suitcases: a large one and a small one for travelling and short holidays. • For safety reasons, ensure that the locks are working well, and all suitcases are properly tagged.

YOU ARE NOT ADVISED TO BRING • Winter clothing from Brunei • Those from Brunei are not well equipped for the cold weather in UK • It is much cheaper to get them there • They take up too much space in your suitcase! • Too many clothes and shoes • Duvet / blanket from Brunei • Printer

ARRIVAL IN UK • BSUnitofficerswill be collecting you at the airport and students will be sent to Brunei Hall via coach from Heathrow • Upon arrival at Brunei Hall, you are required to check in. Here you can freshen up and rest for a bit. • You will not be charged for the first night, and the rate for the consecutive nights will be £1.80 per night. • Later in the day, there will be a briefing by the BSUnitofficers and you will receive your BS number (eg. BS29001/BAS1)
IN LONDON • 1. Get Oyster Card for tube and buses • -Go to the nearest tube station (Paddington) and go to the counter and ask for an Oyster card with credit of £10. • -They will require additional £3 deposit. • -Each tube ride costs £1.80 and bus ride costs £1.20 • -You just need to tap your Oyster card on the reader if you need to use the tube/bus. • -You can top up your Oyster via the self service machines in any stations.
IN LONDON • 2. Phone Lines • •Popular phone companies: O2, Vodafone, 3, T-Mobile • •You can choose whether to get the contract (Prima) or pay-as-you-go (Easi) • •The phone companies can be found easily in Oxford Street or Bayswater. • •Contract phones usually include free handset, free minutes and free texts with monthly payments. • •Pay-as-you-go offers free texts and free minutes for topping-up within that month.
GOING TO YOUR UNI • •Unlike A-Level students, you have to go to your university/accommodation on your own • •It is advisable to hire a van instead of using the train if you are a first-timer. • •It usually costs a lot, but you can share the cost between 4-5 people. • •You can ask Brunei Hall receptionists for contact details.
