Introduction to Liuzhou

1. Introduction to Liuzhou Liuzhou, also named the Dragon City (it is said in folklores that eight dragons appeared in the Liujiang River), is a comprehensive territorial city center and communication hinge with industry as its pillar industry as well as a historical and cultural city commanding unique sceneries. Liuzhou city consists of six counties and four districts, covering an area of 18,600 square km2. 3.625 million people of 48 peoples live there, including Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Dong and etc.

2. History of Liuzhou • Liuzhou is the origin of primitive people “Liujiang” in south China. Bailian Cave is where they used to live in 30,000 to 70,000 years ago. Other heritages of ancient people also include Liyuzui(鲤鱼嘴) at Longtan Park which was around 7000 years ago and Manwangcheng （蛮王城(about 4000 years ago), as well as some other smaller heritages along the Liujiang river.

3. Liuzhou & Liu zongyuan • Liuzhou is the birthplace of ancestors in South China. Liujiang People and Bailiang Cave People lived there even 70 thousand years ago. Liuzhou was set up in the West Han Dynasty over 2,100 years ago. Liu Zongyuan, a famous and great intellectual in ancient Chinese history, was assigned by the Emperor to govern Liuzhou and stayed his rest life here, and his temple, tomb as well as some epigraphs scribed by him are fully and completely protected here.

There are three railway trunks, three expressways, and three national highways converged in Liuzhou, and hence it only takes only four hours to reach the North Gulf.

10. To get to the sites • Bailian Cave is located in the southern suberbs.To get there,starting from GXUT, you can take No.23 bus to the stop of Pauline Trade City, and then you can go to there by No.94 bus getting off at the stop of Cross of Dule Rode.

Ethnic Minority Culture • Festivals of Miao Nationality • Some of the Miao’s festivals include the Miao new year, 8th of April, dragon boats festival, and autumn festival, in which the Miao New Year is the biggest event for them. Different from the Spring Festival for the Han Chinese, the Miao New Year is normally in the autumn.

13. Ethnic Minority Culture • Towers of Dong Nationality • The residential buildings of the Dong people are usually made by fir(杉)woods and are normally 2 to 3 levels, stilting along hills or the river. The drum building(鼓楼)is the symbol of Dong architecture.
