Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDAY 1 STEP ONE: BRAINSTORM Once you have chosen two issues that interest you, read the articles that have been provided. Consider both the Pro’s and Con’s of the issue.
Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDAY 1 STEP 2: EVALUATE ONLINE RESOURCES • Anyone can publish on the World Wide Web. This is both one of the strengths and one of the flaws of the Internet. • If you are going to use online sources, you must be aware of the differences in quality that exist among Web sites. • On your worksheet there is a list of criteria that you should use to judge any source you use from the Internet. You want to be able to answer “yes” to as many of the questions as possible in the far right column to use the source as authoritative.

Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDAY 1 Step Three: Researching and Citing Sources • As you search the internet for more sources that will support your position on the issue of your topic, answer the following questions on your worksheet: • What search engine did you use? • What key words did you enter? • Did that search lead you to related sites? • If not, what did you enter next? • Was this more successful?
Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDAY 2 Step Three: Researching and Citing Sources • Go to the K:Drive and open the Day 2 Worksheet • Go back to the articles on your issue that were provided for you (see slides 1 & 2 of this power point): • Evaluate these articles based on the criteria from Step 2 • Copy and Paste the bibliography from the article or use Citationmachine.net to create a bibliography. (see next slide for directions on how to use citation machine) • Copy and Pastethe strongest pieces of evidence from the articles on to the chart. Be sure that you are considering both the Pro and Con sides of the issue.
Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDAY 2 How to use citationmachine.net • Click on the MLA tab on the left. • Scroll down to the NONPRINT options on the left side. • Click on the appropriate document type (the sources that have been provided are either a web document, online article, or web media) • Fill in the appropriate information (you will find this information on the website) • Click submit • The citation will be provided within the box. • Copy and paste the citation into your document.
Activity 2.14: Issues in the World Step Three: Researching and Citing Sources • On your document, write a thesis statement that clearly states your position and offers a reason for your position (avoid using “I”). • For example: “____________ should be _______________ because….” • On your document, write a paragraph that includes one quotation from each of the articles to support your own opinions about the issue.
Activity 2.14: Issues in the WorldDay 3 Step Four: Vocabulary Related to Your Topic • After researching your topic, fill in the concept chart that was given to you. Put important words or phrases you found in the article. • Sort the words and phrases into categories of appeals LOGOS, ETHOS, & PATHOS
