    1. Global Warming and what YOU can do to help!

    2. What is global warming?

    3. Global warming is a change in the earth’s climate.

    4. What causes climate change? Climate change is caused by an increase in the greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. These gases absorb heat leaving the earth and return some of it, making the earth warmer overall.

    5. Before the industrial revolution, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were consistently between 260 and 280 parts per million (ppm). In recent times human activities have increased the concentration to 380 ppm—that’s an increase of more than a third!

    6. What activities produce greenhouse gases?

    7. burning fossil fuels -- coal, oil or gas using electricity generated by burning fossil fuels some aspects of farming: raising cattle and sheep, use of fertilizers and some crops clearing land breakdown of food and plant wastes and sewage some industrial processes like making cement and aluminum

    8. The main greenhouse gases generated by human activity are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, as well as some manufactured gases such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and some of their replacements. Water vapor is also a powerful greenhouse gas, but the amount in the atmosphere is not directly linked to human activity.

    9. What are the effects of climate change?

    10. Research by the world's scientists, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, suggests that: On average, the Earth's temperature has already risen by around 1.5 °F over the past hundred years, and is projected to increase from 2.1°F - 13.5°F by the end of the 21st century. Sea levels are rising as oceans expand and glaciers and ice sheets melt - by 2100 sea levels may rise by 7 inches - 24 inches.

    11. Changes in climate patterns mean we will see some weather events and extremes such as heat waves, floods and storms, droughts and bushfires become more frequent, more widespread or more intense. Adverse impacts on plants, animals and human health as climate patterns shift.

    12. What are some examples of the effect of climate change?

    14. Save money and reduce climate change.

    15. When you cut your greenhouse gas emissions by saving energy, you’ll also save money on energy bills. Each ton of greenhouse gas avoided will save between $130 and $470 depending on the type of energy used (exact savings will depend on the price you pay for each type of energy).

    16. More money can be saved by cutting consumption of other products and services, the manufacture of which generates greenhouse gases, such as water, paper, metals, glass and plastics. An average household can save several ton of greenhouse gas and hundreds of dollars each year. Lisa will explain things that you can do by going GREEN and reducing climate change.

    17. Putting it into perspective!

    18. The average American produces between 7 and 20 tons of greenhouse gas each year.

    19. That’s between 102,000 and 320,000 balloons!

    20. How can you decrease the amount of greenhouse gases?

    21. Replace ordinary light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL). You will save 1200 balloons!

    22. Drive less. Walk, bike or carpool. You will save 8 balloons for every mile you don’t drive!

    23. Recycle! You will save 19,200 balloons by just recycling half of your household waste!

    24. Inflate your tires properly. It will improve gas mileage by 3.3%. Every gallon of gas saved saves 160 balloons!

    25. Use less hot water. Washing your clothes in cold water will save 4000 balloons!

    26. Avoid products with a lot of packaging. You will save 9600 balloons by cutting down your garbage by 10%!

    27. Adjust your thermostat. Moving your thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer will save 16,000 balloons!

    28. Turn off electronic devices when not using them. You will save up to 24,000 balloons!

    29. Plant a tree. A single tree will absorb one ton of greenhouse gas in its lifetime. That’s 16,000 balloons!

    30. Spread the word! Tell your friends the simple things they can do to help global warming. The number of balloons saved is unlimited!

    31. Other things that will help! Conserve water Only run dishwater when full Use biodegradable detergents and trash bags Recycle food scraps Buy items in bulk Buy recycled products Use glass instead of plastic containers Others?
