  1. HEADING IN FOOTBALL we need to hit the ball first and not allow it to hit us  we have to hit it with the upper part of our forehead  we have to hit the ball as close to its equator as possible, in order for it to go  straight we need to keep our eyes open, in order to see where we're hitting the ball

  2. BASIC TECHNIQUES USE IN HEADINGS • Stand on the balls of your feet, holding your arms slightly outstretched for balance, with your feet spaced apart and one foot slightly forward of the other. • Tense your neck and shoulder muscles as the ball approaches so the impact will not jar your head. Lean backward with your torso, not your neck. Keep your eyes open and fixed on the ball, and keep your mouth closed to prevent biting your lips or tongue.

  3. BASIC TECHNIQUES CON’T • Aim your forehead for the lower half of the ball if you are defending, as this will send the ball higher and farther and get it out of your team's side of the field. Aim for the upper half of the ball if you are attacking because that will drive the ball downward and make it harder for a goalie to block. • Thrust forward at the waist, hitting the ball instead of allowing the ball to hit you. Strike the ball with your forehead or hairline, not your face or scalp.

  4. PRACTICES AND HEADING DRILLS • If you tend to flinch or close your eyes, practice heading with a lightweight ball such as a beach ball or child's ball. Because a lightweight ball won't hurt much even if it hits you full in the face, it is easier to head it with confidence. • Begin from a kneeling position, allowing a standing partner to lob the ball gently down toward you. Dive forward onto your hands to head the ball. Because the ball is coming downward toward the top of your head, you are more likely to hit the ball with your forehead instead of your face. Your alignment to your partner will also make it easier to tell whether you are hitting the ball at the right angle. A correctly headed ball will go straight into your partner's hands, while a ball that you hit with the wrong part of your head will go either to high or too low.

  5. PRACTICES AND HEADING DRILLSCON’T • Stand two or three yards away from a partner. Have your partner lob a ball gently toward your head and head it back into his hands. • Stand two or three yards away from three partners, with one partner standing directly across from you and one partner standing on each side of her. Practice heading the ball slightly off-center with your head to direct it toward one of your other partners instead of the person standing directly across from you.
