RESPECT(Growing on Threes)DepED NLTSGO Day 1September 6, 2008Teachers' Camp, Baguio City
RESPECT: WHAT IS IT? • “...taking someone's feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration.” • “It also seems to include acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting their individuality and idiosyncrasies.” (Hein)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? • POWER or RESPECT? • Authority is not the assurance of respect nor progress. • “When we are respected we gain the voluntary cooperation of people. When people respect one another there are fewer conflicts.” (Hein)
RESPECT THAT GROWS ON THREES. • ONE..TWO..THREE! 1. SELF – RESPECT 2. FROM OTHERS 3. TOWARDS OTHERS
AND SO... WHAT COULD IT BE? • R OLL IT AND R EDEFINE IT. • E ARNESTNESS: BE HONEST AND SINCERE • S ERVICE: BE WITH AND FOR OTHERS • P ERSONALITY: THE EQUAL LEVEL • E NTANGLE: INVOLVE YOUR MEMBERS • C ONTROL: WHAT IS VOLUNTARY • T HINK ++: BE POSITIVE!
ROLL IT: KNOW WHAT YOU WANT • Confidence – mapping is necessary to be able to define what you have now and improve on it. • REMEMBER! • Confidence DOES NOT MEAN being AUTOMATICALLY RESPECTED by your members!
THE SUCCESS TIMELINE • DRAW A LINE AND PLACE YOUR AGE ON ITS END. CALIBRATE OR DIVIDE IT ACCORDINGLY. 0 5 10 15
THE SUCCESS TIMELINE • AND FOR EVERY “PERIOD” OF YOUR LIFE, LIKE 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 YEARS, WRITE THREE SUCCESS YOU HAVE ACHIEVED. Examples: *I went to the dentist for the first time. *I got perfect during my Grade 1 English test. *I was elected Vice President in our Regional SSG Federation 0 5 10 15
CONFIDENCE IS SELF-RESPECT • SUCCESSES in your life are essential parts in shaping your PERCEPTION of yourself. • SELF IMAGE: How YOU see yourself and how OTHERS see you.
CONFIDENCE IS SELF - RESPECT Now the QUESTION IS... “HOW will you learn to display it [Confidence] when you don't have it?” (Mangaliag, 2008)
By: REDEFINING • A matter of CHANGING THE MINDSET. 1. HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF? 2. HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE SEEN? 3. AND THEN WHAT?
ROLL IT: KNOW WHAT YOU WANT • Know WHAT YOU WANT • HAVE A TARGET OR GOAL. • Know WHAT YOU ARE DOING. • -THE JOURNEY TOWARDS YOUR AIM IS OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE.
EARNESTNESS: HONESTY AND SINCERITY TRUTH IN IT • BE OPEN TO YOUR MEMBERS. • YOU DON'T ONLY EARN THERE TRUST, YOU UPHOLD INTEGRITY.
SERVICE: BE WITH AND FOR OTHERS • RESPECT IS A TWO WAY STREET. (Briski)Thus, if you want to BE respected, it is equally important to treat your members with DUE RESPECT.
PERSONALITY: ON EQUAL LEVEL SPEAK AND BE WITH THEM ON THEIR LEVEL. • ADDRESSING YOUR MEMBERS PERSONALLY AND BEING WITH THEM MAKE IT MORE INTIMATE. THIS ESTABLISHES A GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP IN A MORE PERSONAL LEVEL.
PERSONALITY: ON EQUAL LEVEL • TREATING OTHERS AS PEERS... “easier for them to open up to you..” “...and for you to understand more about what they need.”
ENTANGLE: INVOLVE YOUR MEMBERS INVOLVEMENT = MOTIVATION Valuing your members makes them feel their SELF WORTH
CONTROL: WHAT IS VOLUNTARY? • Difference of FEAR and RESPECT. 0 10 FEAR RESPECT FEAR AND RESPECT ARE IN DIFFERENT ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM.
Here are some comparisons between fear and respect * Fear is toxic. * Fear destroys self-confidence. * Fear is life-threatening. * Fear is forced. * Fear is learned. • +Respect is nurturing. • +Respect builds it. • +Respect is life- enhancing. • +Respect is earned. • +Respect is earned. (Hein)
CONTROL: THE FEAR FACTOR • respect is a process. It is not inherent to the authority. It is a goal.
THINK ++: POSITIVE OUTLOOK + + • OPTIMISM radiates CONTAGIOUS POSITIVENESS. + +
AND THEN WHAT? REMEMBER. • ROLL IT AND REDEFINE IT. • EARNESTNESS: BE HONEST AND SINCERE • S ERVICE: BE WITH AND FOR OTHERS • P ERSONALITY: THE EQUAL LEVEL • ENTANGLE: INVOLVE YOUR MEMBERS • C ONTROL: WHAT IS VOLUNTARY • THINK ++: BE POSITIVE!
