  3. Problem Statement Design and construct a bridge Use only spaghetti, newsprint, and glue Must span a 20” gap Not to exceed 5” tall and 5” wide Must support a load consisting of a bucket and sand

  4. Conceptualiztion Influenced by large scale bridges and observations of other projects Research using West Point Bridge Design Most simple design possible Use of geometric principles and forces Highly cost effective and reliable on a large scale

  5. Proposed Design Beams were created by wrapping spaghetti in newspaper and sealing with glue Base frame was created with joints of newspaper strips and glue Secondary supports were then added Strength of the triangle was important Supports extend down 5” and connect diagonally to the main beams

  6. Experimental Procedure Beam will lay across the center of the device Load of sand will be suspended from beam Sand added until complete failure Load strategy is to add sand at a rate that permits the greatest mass suspended before complete failure

  7. Sample Calculations Forces on the bridge were calculated Force (in Newtons) = mass ∙ acceleration (or gravity) Vectors were used to determine how forces would be distributed along beams and how they could be counteracted FR = ∑ Fx Free body diagram (FDB) to predict forces on the bridge and to change point force of bucket to distributive force

  8. Safety Appendix Main safety concern was sharp pieces of pasta Easily avoided by cutting towards a trash can

  9. Results, Conclusions, & Recommendations
