  7. 联合进程图 • Deadlocks depend on the program and the scheduling • Program design • the order of the statements in the code creates the “landscape” of the joint progress diagram • this landscape may contain gray “swamp” areas leading to deadlock • Scheduling condition • the interleaved dynamics of multiple executions traces a “path” in this landscape • this path may sink in the swamps USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  9. 资源分配图 • V,节点集合,分为两类: • P = {P1, P2, …, Pn}, the set consisting of all the processes in the system. • R = {R1, R2, …, Rm}, the set consisting of all resource types in the system. Each resource type Ri has Wi instances • 资源申请边:request edge – directed edge Pi Rj • 资源分配边:assignment edge– directed edge Rj Pi USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

Process • Resource Type with 4 instances • Pirequests instance of Rj • Pi is holding an instance of Rj Pi Rj Pi Rj USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  12. P1 R1 R2 P2 两种图示的等效性 Joint Progress Diagram Resource Allocation Graph P2Rel(R1) P2Rel(R2) P2Req(R1) P2Req(R2) P1Req(R1) P1Rel(R1) P1Rel(R2) P1Req(R2) USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  13. Deadlock Definition • Definition: A set of processes is in a deadlock state when every process in the set is waiting on a resource which is being held by another process in the set • Every process is waiting • All of the resources being waited on are held by a process or processes within the set • A deadlock is a permanent blocking of a set of threads • A deadlock can happen while threads/processes are competing for system resources or communicating with each other • there is no universal efficient solution against deadlocks USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  14. The Conditions for Deadlock • Design conditions for deadlock (create the swamps) • 资源互斥 mutual exclusion—the design contains protected critical regions; only one process at a time may use these • 持有等待 hold & wait—the design is such that, while inside a critical region, a process may have to wait for another critical region 进程在请求新资源时,其已获得的资源并不释放 • 不可抢占 no resource preemption —there must not be any hardware or O/S mechanism forcibly removing a process from its. CR 凡是可抢占资源均不构成死锁的原因!(见下页的解释) • Scheduling condition for deadlock (go to the swamps) • 循环等待circular wait — two or more hold-&-wait’s are happening in a circle: each process holds a resource needed by the next • Design + Scheduling Condition = Deadlock 充要 USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  16. Part 1: Process Management • Processes and Threads • Processor Scheduling • Concurrency: Mutual Exclusion and Synchronization • Concurrency: Deadlock and Starvation • The Deadlock Problem • Methods for Handling Deadlocks • Dining Philosophers Problem USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  19. Alexander cuts the Gordian knot Ostrich’s Strategy Alexander’s Strategy USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  25. Deadlock detection algorithm: • Look for an unmarked process, Pi , for which the i-th row of R is less than or equal to A. 寻找可以运行完毕的进程 • If such a process is found, add the i-th row of C to A, mark the process, and go back to step 1. 进程运行完毕后将释放资源 • If no such process exists, the algorithm terminates. • When the algorithm finishes, all the unmarked processes, if any, are deadlocked. USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  26. 死锁恢复 • Strategies for deadlock recovery • Abort all deadlocked processes • Back up each deadlocked process to some previously defined checkpoint, and restart all process • original deadlock may occur • Successively abort deadlocked processes until deadlock no longer exists • Successively preempt resources until deadlock no longer exists USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  27. 死锁恢复 • Selection Criteria for Deadlocked Processes • Least amount of processor time consumed so far • Least number of lines of output produced so far • Most estimated time remaining • Least total resources allocated so far • Lowest priority USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

Deadlock Prevention • Remove one of the design or scheduling conditions? • remove “mutual exclusion”? • → not possible: must always be supported by the OS;但可增加资源总数 • remove “hold & wait”? • require that a process gets all its resources at one time • → inefficient and impractical: defeats interleaving, creates long waits, cannot predict all resource needs • remove “no preemption” = allow preemption? • require that a process releases and requests again →ok • remove “circular wait”? • ex: impose an ordering of resources →inefficient, again

Deadlock Avoidance • Allow all conditions, but allocate wisely • Given a resource allocation request, a decision is made dynamically • Whether granting this request can potentially lead to a deadlock or not • do not start a process if its demands might lead to deadlock • do not grant an incremental resource request to a running process if this allocation might lead to deadlock • Avoidance strategies requires knowledge of future process request (calculating “chess moves” ahead) USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  32. Several Instances of a Resource Type

  33. Several Instances of a Resource Type • 安全和不安全状态: • 例子:一种资源,共有10个实例。 USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  36. The Banker’s Algorithm • Algorithm for checking to see if a state is safe: • Look for row, R, whose unmet resource needs all ≤ A. If no such row exists, system will eventually deadlock since no process can run to completion 至少右边矩阵中有一行小于A,可启动资源分配 • Assume process of row chosen requests all resources it needs and finishes. Mark process as terminated, add all its resources to the A vector. A • Repeat steps 1 and 2 until either all processes marked terminated (initial state was safe) or no process left whose resource needs can be met (there is a deadlock). USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

如果Claim(i,j)=k, 表示进程i需要Rj类资源的最大数目为k。 如果Allocation(i,j)=k, 表示进程i当前已分得Rj类资源k个。 如果Need(i,j)=k, 表示进程i还需要Rj类资源k个,方能完成其任务。 Request(i,j)= Claim(i,j)-Allocated(i,j) USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  42. Part 1: Process Management • Processes and Threads • Processor Scheduling • Concurrency: Mutual Exclusion and Synchronization • Concurrency: Deadlock and Starvation • The Deadlock Problem • Methods for Handling Deadlocks • Dining Philosophers Problem USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

USTC; 21000201-OPERATING SYSTEMS; FALL 2012; INSTRUCTOR: CHI ZHANG

  47. After the class…
