Followership- What is it? • Similar to the concept of Leadership you have all experienced what it means to follow others. • Examples: • Being a member of a team • Serving on a project team for an academic class • Holding a job – working for someone else • Your new role as Freshman at The Citadel will bring this notion of being a follower to a whole new level!

  3. Like Leadership, the concept of Followership is best understood by a concise definition Followership Definition - “Followers of character and commitment acting to support the needs and goals of the team.” Followership – a definition • This means placing the needs of others before your desires and building a relationship of trust and loyalty between your leader and your team!

  4. Group Work • Work together to identify the qualities to be a successful follower • Be prepared to share again with the whole group

  5. Some Qualities of Followership Self-management/Discipline Commitment Competence and focus Courage Humility Understand our Core Values

  6. Applying Followership Always strive to improving self Seeing good/bad examples of leaders and adjusting oneself accordingly Reactions to stress, remaining calm Use constructive ways to fight stress/fatigue

  7. Fourth Class System – What is it? It is a system of requirements, traditional behaviors, duties, and expectations designed to promote this concept of followership. Governed by Cadet Regulations, “the Blue Book,” the Fourth Class System is one of the foundational aspects of The Citadel Experience

  8. Principles of the Fourth Class System All cadets will be treated with dignity and respect. All cadets, regardless of class, will accept personal responsibility for the fair, equitable, proper, and effective operation of the system. All cadets will implement the system in such a manner as to support each cadet's opportunity to achieve academic, military, physical, and moral-ethical excellence. No cadet will put another cadet in a position where he or she must compromise Citadel Core Values or disregard prescribed rules, regulations, or standards. Source: The Blue Book, Chapter 3

Principles of the Fourth Class System • The system will not interfere with a Fourth Class Cadet's right to adequate sleep and food. • The system must provide the new cadet with the necessary positive leadership development training to be prepared to exercise leadership within the Corps of Cadets and serve as the foundation for the four-year progression of The Citadel leadership model. • The system, implemented in a manner that personifies our institutional core values, uncovers and attempts to develop deficiencies in new cadets, which might otherwise result in a cadet's failure to achieve or exceed prescribed standards of performance.   10. To provide new cadets with an understanding of The Citadel’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Respect. To teach new cadets the regulations, customs and traditions of The Citadel. To remove wealth and former station as factors in the development of new cadets. To instill in new cadets a sense of humility and selfless subordination. To develop personal character and create a foundation for honorable and ethical decision-making. . Key Objectives of the Fourth Class System

  11. To instill new cadets with self-discipline. To physically challenge new cadets and establish a foundation of understanding the necessity of physical fitness for life. To instruct new cadets in time management. To prepare new cadets for academic achievement. To inculcate class cohesion in support of The Citadel Mission and the development of Principled Leaders. What you can expect from your cadet leaders • Demonstrate a sense of accountability for those in their care; (i.e. you) • Treat each other with dignity and respect; • Operate within the rules and regulations, particularly Chapter Three of the Blue Book; • Never put you in a position where you must compromise Citadel Core Values or disregard prescribed rules, regulations, or standards. • SOURCE: The Citadel Training Manual, p6
