Definition of ophthalmology The word ophthalmology comes from the Greek roots ὀφθαλμός, ophthalmos, i.e. eye and -λoγία, -logia, i.e. "study of, discourse". ophthalmology literally means "the science of eyes".
Who's who in eye care • Ophthalmologist • Is a physician specializing in medical and surgical care of the eye. • Ophthalmologists are trained to provide the full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to performing complex and delicate eye surgery.
Who's who in eye care • Optometrist A health care provider who prescribe glasses and other optical devices
Who's who in eye care • Optician A professional who makes and fits eye glasses and other optical devices prescribed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
