Setting • In Denmark during World War Two (1943) • The story takes place in Annemarie’s apartment, on the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark and Uncle Henrick’s house

Chapters 1-3 Preview • Annemarie, Ellen and Kirsti get stopped by the German soldiers for running in the streets. • We learn about King Christian X (the King of Denmark). Annemarie’s older sister (who died) and how the war has changed people. • We learn about the hardships the families have to endure since the war began (no butter, little fuel or electricity to heat homes) • Mrs. Hirsh’s store was closed because she is Jewish. • Annemarie is afraid for her friend, Ellen, who is also Jewish.
Chapters 4-6 Preview • Kirsti does not like her new shoes because they are made out of fish skin. • The girls remember what it was like before the war started. • Ellen stays with the Johansen’s and pretends to be their daughter. • The soldiers show up trying to find Ellen’s family. They question Annemarie’s parents about where the Rosen’s are. • The soldiers believe that Ellen is the daughter of the Johansen (even though she is not). • Mrs. Johansen, Annemarie, Kirsti and Ellen go to Uncle Henrik’s house and Mr. Johansen stays behind so the soldiers won’t get suspicious
Chapters 7-9 Preview • Ellen is worried about her parents • The girls settle in to living at Uncle Henrik’s • They pretend that someone has died but inside the coffin are blankets, coats and food. • People pretending to be part of Annemarie’s family show up at Uncle Henrik’s house but they are really Jewish people who they are going to help escape Denmark. • Ellen’s parents come to Uncle Henrik’s house along with Peter Neilsen
Chapters 10-12 Preview • The soldiers come to Uncle Henrik’s house but leave without knowing what was really happening. • The Jewish people, including Ellen and her parents, go with Peter and Mrs. Johansen and hide in Uncle Henrik’s boat. • Annemarie has to say goodbye to her friend not knowing when or if she will ever see her again. • Annemarie goes to see where her mother is and sees her lying on the ground.
Chapters 13-15 Preview • Mrs. Johansen tells Annemarie that she hurt her ankle and is okay. • Annemarie helps her mother back to the house and finds a package that Mr. Rosen dropped. • Annemarie has to bring the package to Uncle Henrik because it is very important. • Soldiers stop Annemarie but they don’t suspect anything.
Chapters 16-17 Preview • Uncle Henrik tells Annemarie a little bit of the secret plan to get the Rosen's and other Jewish people out of Denmark. • The Rosen family is safe in Sweden. • The story ends two years in the “future” when the war has ended. • Annemarie finds out what really happened to her older sister, Lise. • Annemarie hopes that she will one day see her dear friend Ellen now that the war is over.
