African Continent and Food Security NEPAD initiative launched in 2001 by the African Union Key priority areas • Agriculture and food security • across the continent. • Enhancement of food supply and reduction of hunger & poverty Population of Africa will reach 1.8 billion by 2050 from that of 900 M today ! Green Revolution in Africa is essential for achieving food security in the continent

Major Water Bodies in Africa Available for Irrigation • Major water bodies across the continent • include major rivers - the Blue Nile, the • White Nile, Limjpopo, Niger, Volta, • Senegal & Chari & major lakes - Lake • Chad, Lake Victoria & Lake Malawi. • There are 73 major rivers & lakes, 1300 • small lakes, 13 major river basins & 104 • small river basins across Africa . • Abundance of water across the continent. • Only 20% of it is required to make the • continent food secure.

  6. Agriculture in Africa • 60 percent of African workers are employed by the agricultural sector • On an average Agriculture contributes to over 35% of the continents GDP • The World Bank puts agriculture and the productivity of small farmers at the heart of the global agenda to reduce poverty

Green Revolution for Africa ‘Top Priority’ • Agriculture can work in concert with other sectors to produce faster growth, reduce poverty, and sustain the environment. • Two thirds of the world’s agricultural ‘’value added ‘’ is created in developing countries. • Agriculture is the key to food security & poverty reduction • “AGRICULTURE FOR DEVELOPMENT,” – is the norm of the day

  12. Deploy Efficient Irrigation Systems • In Egypt, over 100,000 Kirloskar Pump sets are greening 200,000 ha of desert land along the river NILE. In Egypt, a pump is called “Kirloskar” !!

Increase Collaboration Between Nations on Shared Management of Water Resources Worlds Largest Pumping Project, Gujarat, India commissioned by KBL • Five pumping stations • 26 concrete volute pumps (each 80,000 m3/hr) • 22 vertical turbine pumps (each 20,000 m3/hr) • Total flow 2.26 Million cubic meter of water per hour • Irrigates 540,000 hectares of farm land. • Supplies drinking water to 30 M people in 4620 towns & villages.

Improve Investment in the Water Sector - To Reach Millennium Development Goals of The UN by 2015 The Millennium development goal aims at Improving access to water & sanitation to atleast 3.5 Bn people & halving poverty by 2015 Millions of Jamaicans enjoy drinking water with large water supply schemes designed by KBL. Irrigation : LAO PDR : The Results Were Extraordinary... • Over 7000 Kirloskar Pump sets are working across the country along the river Mekong. • In 1996, Laos was importing rice extensively, but with the help of Kirloskar pump sets & irrigation systems rice production went up 25 times to about 2.2 Million tonnes in 2004. • Rice production in the dry season increased from 25,000 tonnes to 700,000 tonnes,due to Affordable, Adaptable and Appropriate Kirloskar Irrigation Systems.
