Genocide • The killing of an entire people; deliberate attempt to destroy an entire religious or ethnic group.
Armenian Genocide • (1915-1918) • Resulted in 1,500,000 deaths • Often overshadowed by WW I, the first genocide of the 20thcentury • Occurred when two million Armenians living in Turkey were eliminated from their historic homeland through forced deportations and massacres.
Ukrainian Genocide • (1932-1933) • Resulted in 7,000,000 deaths • Joseph Stalin was responsible for setting in motion events designed to cause a famine in the Ukraine to destroy the people there seeking independence from his rule • People were deprived of the food they had grown with their own hands. Did you know that Stalin was responsible for more deaths than Hitler?
Nanking Massacre • (1937-1938) • Resulted in 300,000 deaths • In December of 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army marched into China’s capital city of Nanking and proceeded to murder 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians and soldiers in the city. • The six weeks of carnage would become known as the Rape of Nanking.
Cambodian Genocide • (1975-1979) • Resulted in 2,000,000 deaths • An attempt by Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot to form a Communist peasant farming society resulted in the deaths of 25% of the country’s population from starvation, overwork, and executions.
Bosnian Genocide • (1992-1995) • Resulted in 200,000 deaths • A conflict between the three main ethnic groups, the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims resulted in genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in Bosnia.
Rwandan Genocide • (1994) • Resulted in close to a million deaths – approximately 800,000, in about 100 days from April to July 1994; • Conflict between the Hutus and Tutsis where the Hutu majority were the perpetrators. From a Rwandan Memorial
