What we do (in a nutshell) • Design theory-driven interventions to target prevalent health threats • Apply for funding to test and evaluate the interventions • Run studies of the interventions to evaluate their effectiveness • If effective, package and disseminate the interventions and publish on the results • My team has 3 currently funded projects, all relating to motor vehicle safety
In Control: Beyond Distraction Teen Distracted Driving Intervention Using an anti-manipulation strategy vs. lecture approach Multi-component, whole school approach Series of posters, contests, with social media Student involvement throughout Piloting at 2 high schools in VB 1 control, 1 intervention surveys, driver observations, focus groups Funded by DMV/EVMS
Professional Training Grant Goal is to train professionals in the use of 2 of our empirically supported interventions for car safety Boost ‘em in the Back Seat video intervention (www.boosterseats4safety.org) Make it Click Initiative (www.umakeitclick.org) Creating online training courses for CE credits Working with lead agencies of each profession Funded by CDC
Car Safety Messages Study • 2-site experimental study to advise on how the US should message parents regarding car seat safety and seat selection • What is the most effective method of framing the NHTSA CPS guidelines to increase parents’ knowledge and improve correct seat selections? • Parents will view 1 of 4 alternative messages or a control and respond to pre-post assessments in a computer lab setting • Working with TransAnalyticsin Philadelphia • Funded by NHTSA
