  1. TDS EGG PROJECT Small Holder Egg Production Models 24 Bird Pilot Project Funded by FAO since April 2011. Roamer

  2. Working to evolve a model to replicate throughout Zimbabwe • 185 Farmers • Tested many models • Roaming • 40 Bird on ground • 100 Bird on ground • 6P in cages • 12P in cages • 72P in cages • Feeding greens • Different suppliers • Different breeds • Housing systems • TEST ARE ONGOING

  3. 12 BIRDS IN CAGES & multiples of 12 Birds Benefits of cage Coccidiosis control Worm parasites Other diseases Need less food Waste less food Less fighting Clean eggs Unfertilized eggs Convenient composting Labour 12P is “Flagship” “Entry Point” model

  4. 24 Bird Roamer

  5. 72 Bird Model 72 Bird

  6. Conservation Agriculture Egg viability 80% of cost of egg is feed 75% of feed is maize or soya 80% of maize and soya cost is fert Compost using chicken manure replaces fert. . Maize 11.3 Tne/Ha Soya 2.55 Tne/Ha Marginal Sandy Soils

  7. 6x6 Plot 7th December 2011

  8. Soyas Low cost to produce with no fertilizer Good market opportunity Potential to value add Virtually no external input costs

  9. RUSSIAN COMFREY

  10. Market Potential • Annual per capita egg consumption figures: • Mexico ………. 320 • Europe ..…….. 250 • RSA …………... 160 • Zimbabwe .…. 24

  11. Marketing • Best return to farmer from own marketing but volumes limited • Saving on: • Transport • Packaging • Wholesaler commissions • Retailer commissions

  12. TASTE CPA SUPERMARKET

  13. Value Add: Hard Boiled Eggs Tea Eggs Baking

  14. Processing Marketing of eggs divided into 2 categories: Shell Eggs require: Proximity to market Process Eggs require: Low cost production Minimum capital investment Favour countries near to equator Friendly temperatures and daylight hours Low cost maize and soya • Uses of Process Eggs • Egg powder • Pharmaceutical • Biotechnology • Leather industry

  15. In order to grow and become an efficient sustainable business must become a “legal entity”. • Negotiate services • Marketing • Bulk Buying • Financing • Processing • Milling • Storing

  16. AN EGG A DAY DELIVERED BY THE HEN In resource-limited settings, diets consist primarily of plant-source foods. Rural diets lack iron, zinc, calcium in particular.Iron and iodine deficiencies are related to physical and mental incapacity One of the most exciting discoveries is of the power of vitamin A, which is found in eggs. Vitamin A deficiency affects some 60% of the general population in Sub-Saharan Africa. A study of HIV-infected women in Malawi concluded that vitamin A deficient women were four and a half times more likely to pass the virus on to their children than those with adequate vitamin A levels in their blood. Eggs also supply riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. They are also an inexpensive single-food source of protein. HEALTH BENEFITS

  17. A SUSTAINABLE SUCCESSFUL LONG TERM POJECT requires many elements • We must produce products of a quality and at a price that the market requires • To do this require not only efficient low cost production but also: • Financing • Inputs • Transport • Marketing • Value adding • Research • So far only really looked at “farmer level model” • Different aspects of business carried out a different levels

  18. Farmer level Ward level District level National level

  19. Farmer level • Farm production • Collect inputs from ward service centre • Delivery to ward service centre

  20. Ward level • Committee represent farmers • Liaise with farmers • Impose disciplines • Manage ward service centre

  21. District level • Office and administration • Marketing • Banking • Inputs • Stock feed formulation • Value adding • Transport

  22. National model • Research • Financing • Processing • Training school

  23. Summary Pre-selection CA inseparable poultry aspect Do 6x6 well = do layers well Germination phase

  24. Potential to transform rural Zimbabwe
