  5. Problem SpaceSource of Inspiration • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBohrmyo-I

  6. Conceptual Model • Based off the ‘Sixth Sense’ from TED Labs at MIT. • Interface is projected from a small, portable projector that can be worn around the neck or carried in one’s pocket.

  7. Identifying Needs and Establishing Requirements

  8. A. Target Audience People who are: • Foreign, thus not familiar with American Dental system • Have insurance both at home and in the US • Particularly for people with chronic dental problems

  9. Data Gathering for Requirements • Interview: 2 foreign students Participant A: Male, Student, 25, Chinese, Recent victim of an abnormal wisdom tooth. Participant B: Female, Student, 27, Chinese, Never been to a dental clinic since came to the US. Both have dental insurance.

  10. Major findings

  11. B. Requirement Analysis • User Requirement • Minimal knowledge about computer and certain amount of exposure to e-devices. • Normal vision and dexterity.

  12. B. Requirement Analysis 2. Functionality Requirements • Data retrieval and updating with minimal operations • Locate proper dentist using various criteria • Insurance Info • Healthy Suggestions and appointments • Translation

  13. B. Requirement Analysis 3. Usability Efficiency: Easy and accurate Safety: Authentication and data backup Manipulation and Operation: Small learning curve Physical Requirements: Resist to water, high temperature and pressure

  14. C Task Scenario

  15. Design and Prototypes

  16. Design and Prototypes Design Concepts • Using intuitive icons • Icons are rotatable and easy to manipulate • Contextual awareness, Easy to fall back home • Easy to perform major tasks

  17. Design and Prototypes • Low-fidelity Prototype

  18. Design and Prototypes • High-fidelity Prototype • http://www.apuchle.com/I541/HiResprototype/

  19. Evaluating designs

  20. Usability Study-Interview • A. Four participants • B. Six questions (open-ended question) Example : While you’re using the product, do you always know where you are?

  21. Usability Study-Internal Walkthrough • A. One team member • B. Three tasks Example : Using “My Records” which is under the functionality of “My Mouth” to send your dental records to the dentist.

  22. Assessment of findings • Most of participants thought the device (PDA) makes sense to them and is helpful especially when they face dental care problem, but there still has some points could be improved.

  23. Assessment of findings (Interview) • Pro : • All the usability participant know how to accomplish the task by the way the design team desired • All the usability participant agree that they always know where they are while they are using the product

  24. Assessment of findings (Interview) • Con : • Some participants cannot connect part of the icons with their functionality • most of participants cannot image what difference between the current prototype and the projectable version of the device

  25. Assessment of findings (Internal Walkthrough) • The prototype is not totally interactive, hence it is difficult for participants to clearly understand the whole concept of the device • Although most of participants are international student, they had not undergo the dental issues in the United States yet

  26. How to improve the product with the evaluation finding in the re-design • Reconsider what icons could be accepted and understood with their functionality by most of the users • Enhance the interactive level of the product • Adjust the position of the user to the same spot
