  1. There are millions of existing buildings throughout Europe that will require alterations and improved access for the disabled and the elderly to comply with the disability legislation. There are many existing lower rise buildings where most able bodied people would normally use the stairs and where there is less demand for passenger lifts. In these instances a lifting platform could be an ideal solution. New disability legislation requires accessibility to all floors within a building, by other means than use of the existing stairways. 2. In existing buildings accessibility requirements can be easily and cost effectively met by installing a lifting platform with an enclosed lift-way in preference to a conventional lift. Often it is not a question of whether to install a lifting platform or a conventional passenger lift but more often a question of whether to install a lifting platform, or nothing at all. This as a result of pre-existing building constraints such as problems to build a lift pit, lack of free pace in the building, etc. The solution offered by the lifting platform can all too often be the only choice.
