Unit 5: ABC Model • Is a problem-focused approach-applied within 4 to 6 weeks of the stressor • A Part • Developing and maintaining rapport • Listening • Good eye contact • Expressive vocal style • Questioning • Open ended questions • Close ended questions help gain info but client may feel badgered • Tie questions to what client is saying • Don’t ASSUME! Inquire! • Look at Page 74-see difference in questions
Unit 5: ABC Model • Paraphrasing • Restate your own words what you think client has said or us as clarification • Not invitation for more info • Builds rapport • Reflection of Feelings • Empathy • Letting clients know you understand their feelings • Helps to clarify feelings and shows client they are understood

Recognizing the meaning of event (reframing is good) • 3. Identifying subjective distress and functioning level • Understanding one’s own thought and feelings is first step in coping with them

Unit 5 Project • Explore the ABC Model of Crisis Intervention • 0 – 50 • Apply the model-discuss all of the components… • If it is easier, present a case study to apply the model to…. • The case study details CAN NOT count towards the length of your paper (for example, if you decide to provide a case study, it can not count as one page of your overall paper…the case study should be no more than a paragraph or two. You still must answer all of the questions on the project!)

During the second stage how will you identify the problems that a client presents? Be detailed about what you will ask the client. Feel free to use the form from the text book for the second stage. • 4. What ethical considerations do you need to be aware of in the second stage and why? • 5. How will you help the client cope with their situation through • Preventive techniques? • This section is worth 45 pts. Each question is 9 pts.
Reflects appropriate personal and professional insights regarding the case study. 10 pts. • Writing Structure: Includes introduction with clear thesis statement, complete paragraphs, and brief summary paragraph rephrasing thesis. 10 pts. • Mechanics: Uses correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and APA format for the title page, reference page, and citations. Meets the 3-page essay length requirement. 10 pts.
