General Guidelines • Rough drafts should be typed to ease in the editing process. • Double space the drafts, final copies will be double spaced. • Work on getting your thoughts down on paper, final editing can be used to correct grammar, citations, etc.
Rough Draft – Step One • Write out your statement of controlling purpose on an index card. (This will become the thesis statement for the project.) • Arrange your note cards to match the outline. Include only those cards you plan to include in your report. • All information you choose should be specific to your statement of controlling purpose.
Drafting – The Outline is Your Guide !!! • Introduction • Grab the readers attention. Introduce each main point in general terms including your thesis statement. • Body of the Report • Explore each of your main points in detail using information from your cards. • When you include information from your cards, put the source number in a circle or parentheses. (This will help you document sources later.)
Drafting – The Outline is Your Guide !!! • Body of Report – cont. • Use introductions and transitions when quotes, summaries or paraphrases are used in the paragraphs. Be sure to include a source number. • Conclusion • Restate the main ideas found in the report, tie up any loose ends found in the body of the report.
The Thesis Statement • Rewrite your statement of controlling purpose removing the phrase “the purpose of this report is”. • Example: • CP – The purpose of this report is to discuss the causes of the War of 1812, the battles and other events that took place, and the effects of the war on the development of the United States. This information will explain why the war is known as the second war for independence.
The Thesis Statement • Example • TS – An understanding of the causes, the events, and the effects of the War of 1812 is necessary to appreciate how the United States finally gained its true independence as a nation. • All information you present in your paper must support the Thesis Statement.
