Digital Storytelling Workshop for WGP Lead teachers Feb 2005
What is a digital story? • A series of still or moving images combined with narration or a soundtrack to tell a story • Uses technology capture visual images to tell stories and display to a wider audience • The technology is the vehicle for the story – the focus is on the writing and communication process rather than technical effects
How it enhances curriculum delivery • Provides an environment which supports collaboration and co-constructivist problem solving • Engages struggling readers and writers • Links the visual and written language strands of the English curriculum with the Arts curriculum
Elements of effective digital stories • A point of view • A dramatic question • Emotional content • Economy • Pace • Concise Narration • Effective soundtrack
Planning sequence • Write an initial script/story (use Inspiration to brainstorm) • Plan using a storyboard • Discuss and revise the script • Take the photos and download to the editor • Sequence the images and add the narration • Add special effects and transitions • Add a suitable soundtrack
Digital storytelling editors • I-movie • Moviemaker • Powerpoint • Media blender • Hyperstudio • Flash • Kid pix
Ideas • Have a theme – eg: Saying goodbye • Base story on personal experience • Set the scene – problem or question – build up tension - resolution (effective closure) • Engage the audience with an emotive element – pics make a statement, narrative uses effective pitch and expression • Soundtrack to enhance the story • Encourage originality
Assessment • Set and share clear learning outcomes – step by step achievable stages to be covered • Set and share clear and achievable success criteria • Provide rubrics for self and peer assessment – see web resources • Make your own notes on a teacher rubric for teacher assessment • Rubrics show links to curriculum learning outcomes, success criteria and essential skills in graduated stages – levels
Important Points • Allow for the fact that this takes time! • You need several sessions to achieve quality digital stories • You need to set the scene by promoting the key aspects of effective collaborative learning – taking turns – assuming roles – listening to others points of view – commitment to shared outcome • The teachers role is a guide on the side! Let children learn by making their own decisions
