Transferring the Qi spec to IEC

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is exploring the possibility of transferring the mature Qi specification to a standards development organization. We are seeking the IEC's interest in improving the specification and maintaining backwards compatibility. Join the discussion.

  1. Transferring the Qi spec to IEC TC100 AGS meeting 15 May 2012

  2. The Wireless Power Consortium • WPC is an industry consortium making voluntary interface specifications. • 109 companies are a member of the WPC • More than 60 products have been certified compliant with the Qi interface specification. • The WPC is not a standards development organization • We don’t make standards, only specifications

  3. What we are looking for • The WPC is investigating the possibility to transfer it’s Qi specification to a standards development organization (SDO). • The specification is getting mature • Products that use the specifications are widely available • We prefer a fast procedure but we are not looking for pure ‘rubber stamping’. • IEC’s standardization process improves the quality of the specification and adds value. • The IEC would be free to split up the specification, change terminology, and make any change deemed necessary to improve the specifications. • We are looking for the intention to maintain backwards compatibility with products that use the Qi specifications.

  4. Discussion • Is the IEC interested? • Is TC100 the right forum? • What is the procedure?
