Where We’ve Been • Findings from Gap Analysis conducted by Dr. Jim Stone, Director, National Research Center for Career & Technical Education: • Our current CTE programs are not preparing students for high-growth, high-demand jobs • Many of our high schools are offering the same CTE career pathways, causing redundancy in low-demand fields • The school facilities are not adequate to support the types of CTE programs being offered or that need to be offered, and • The instructional models are not innovative in providing students opportunities for internships, student-run businesses or student organizations to support the career pathways

Where We Are Headed HISD CTE Reform Goals: Ensure equitable access to quality CTE programs for all students Provide relevant and highly-engaging coursework Increase the number of students graduating with industry-recognized certificates and relevant work experience Increase student opportunities to earn college credits and potentially Associate’s Degrees

Student Certifications • Aligned student certifications to industry recognized standards • Aligned student certifications with State recommended certifications by Perkins grant. • Will add certification options to the list if applicable. • Requisition process will be electronic this year and located at http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/60243 website. • Submission deadline of October 18th for the Fall Semester and February 21st for the Spring Semester.

Work-Based Learning • Teacher and student requirements are the same as the 2012-2013 year. • All documents for WBL/Practicum will be on found at http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/60243 by next week. • Guidelines and six-week rotation schedules are included in your folders. • Submit Work-Based Learning and/or practicum documents to Michael Love. mlove@houstonisd.org

Professional Development • We will be accepting applications for funding professional development opportunities related to CTE for the 13-14 year. • Application is available on the CTE website or at https://houstoncte.wufoo.com/forms/perkins-requisition-form-20132014/ • The application will be scored based on a rubric that is outlined on the form. • Last year we provided funding for 17 teachers.

Career and Technical Student Organizations • The CTSO commitment form, extra-duty pay guidelines, and reimbursement forms are available online at http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/60243. • HISD will host a CTSO training on September 25th at Hattie Mae White. • CTSO extra-duty pay will be allocated at the end of both the fall and spring semester. • Expansion of CTSO programs across high schools.
