CONTACT PRECAUTIONS PLUS Diseases requiring this sign: Clostridium difficile [C. diff] diarrhea • 1. Hands must be disinfected before entering the room • Gloves must be worn to enter the room. Gowns must be worn when clothing may contact the patient, environmental surfaces, or contaminated items. • Private room. When a private room is not available, the patient may be placed in a semi-private room with a patient who is infected with the same organism. • Special airflow rooms are not necessary. Doors may remain open. • Gowns and gloves are removed when leaving the patient’s room. • Soap and water wash is required to remove spores by friction. Medicated soap or alcohol hand rub will not destroy C. difficile spores. • Visitors should be asked to sanitize hands when entering and to wash when leaving the patient’s room. • Patients should be transported for essential; purposes only. The patient should wear a clean outer cover gown and disinfect his/her hands. The ticket to ride will be completed and the receiving department will notified that Contact Precautions Plus are required. • When cleaning a Contact Precaution Plus room use hospital approved bleach-based disinfectant on all surfaces after they are cleaned with Sanimaster 4. The one exception is the floor which will be cleaned with only Sanimaster 4. • Pay special attention to “High Touch” surfaces : • bedrails, mattress, head & foot boards, bedside table, bathroom fixtures, commodes, pull cords, call buttons, door knobs, telephones, computer key boards, and all horizontal surfaces.
