  3. Summary In this chapter, Mr. Austin Gore replaces Mr. Hopkins as an overseer. But Douglass does not know the reasons for the changes but he thinks that Mr. Hopkins will cut him more slack than his past overseers. Mr. Gore is a quiet man, he never jokes as other overseers would. He does not argue or hear protest and sometimes irritates slaves as a reason to punish them for it. One day Mr. Gore whips a slave named Demby and he runs to a creek to ease the pain. Mr. Gore calls for him and he refuses to get out of the creek. So Mr. Gore shoots him and he is never investigated for murder and lives free.

  4. Thesis The treatment of slavery was brutal and the conditions were set harshly against the slaves during the 1800’s.

  5. Violent Events that Occurred • Witnesses cold blooded murder of Demby. • Mr. Gore was not put on trial for his murder of Demby. • Woman beats Douglass’s cousin to death with a stick.

  6. Why No Trial for Murder? • Colonel Lloyd and Captain Anthony believe Mr. Gore when he says that one disobedient slave will cause an uprising

  7. Douglass’s Style • Frederick Douglass’s tone would be serious throughout the chapter because he wanted to show the monstrosities of slavery during the 1800’s

  8. Emotion • Douglass gives off an emotion of being appalled. • He hates the sight of other slaves being beaten and murdered. • He was depressed when Mr. Gore replaced Mr. Hopkins as his overseer.
