  3. What is community ownership? • Communities taking ownership (freehold) of assets from private or public agencies (Local Authorities - at less than market value) • Assets are taken to be property ( eg land, buildings, wind turbines) and related rights ( eg fishing, energy)

Community ownership in Scotland • 75,891 assets (2,740 community assets) • 2,718 organisations • Estimated value of £1.45 billion (£.65 billion) • Most common uses: housing, community halls/centres, amenity space (e.g. parks), business lets, cafes/restaurants, educational, grocery shops, heritage, renewable energy, sports and fitness • Two thirds in remote rural • 1 in 20 in urban areas (38.9% of population) Source: Community Ownership in Scotland: a baseline study, DTAS, 2012
