  3. Vietnam in the 1860s • Conquered by France in 1862

  4. World War II, 1940 • Japan takes control of Vietnam

  5. 1940 and beyond in the US • President Franklin Roosevelt signed the SELECTIVE TRAINING AND SERVICE ACT of 1940. • This created the country’s first peactime DRAFT and formally established the Selective Service System. • FROM 1948-1973, during peacetime and wartime, men were DRAFTED to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled by volunteers.

  6. 1945 • Vietnam returns to French rule.

  7. 1946 • War starts between France and Vietnam

  8. 1954 • The French withdraw from Vietnam.

  9. 1957 • The conflict in Vietnam gets worse. • North Vietnam is communist and South Vietnam is nationalist. • From 1957-1965 the struggle was: South Vietnamese Army against the Communist-trained South Vietnamese Rebels called “Vietcong” • The United States provided military advisors at this time.

  10. 1964 • The Gulf of Tonkin Resolutions of August 7, 1964 • The United States military extends to Vietnam, to help South Vietnam. • This involvement was approved by Congress.

  11. 1965 • South Vietnam depends more and more on the United States for military support. • FIRST US TROOPS ENTER VIETNAM IN MARCH of 1965. • US troops remained in Vietnam, mainly fighting against North Vietnam, until 1969.

  12. 1969 • By 1969, the United States slowly began to withdraw its troops

  13. 1973 • A cease-fire was arranged. • The last US troops left Vietnam 2 month after the cease fire. • Fighting returned to Vietnam, but the US did not send troops.

  14. 1975 • South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam. • The US Presidents during the Vietnam War were:John F. Kennedy • Lyndon B. Johnson • Richard Nixon • "No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now. Rarely have so many people been so wrong about so much. Never have the consequences of their misunderstanding been so tragic." • TOTAL YEARS: 1964-1975
