Equation A number sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two quantities are equal. To maintain that “equality” or balance, any operation performed to one side of the equation must be performed on the other side as well.
Isolate the Variable To have only the variable on one side of the equal sign.
Isolate the Variable To have only the variable on one side of the equal sign. a = 22
Example If the side with the variable includes addition, use the opposite operation (subtraction) to isolate the variable. Subtract 3 from BOTH sides x + 3 = 9 -3 -3 x = 6 Since there is addition on the side of the variable, do the OPPOSITE!
Example If the side with the variable includes multiplication, use the opposite operation (division) to isolate the variable. Divide both sides by 6 6x= 24 6 6 x = 4 Since there is multiplication on the side of the variable, do the OPPOSITE!
