The “talkie” era is born • Towards the end of the 1920s, sound began to appear in some films • “Talkies” began to appear • Began as shorts/brief dialogue • The first successful full-length talking film was The Jazz Singer in 1927 (produced by Warner Bros.)
Obsession ensues • People became obsessed with talking movies! • There was such a high demand, movies were often short, goofy, and/or pointless…but they talked! • The industry was trying to keep up with such high demand • Some still chose to make their films silent for artistic purposes • Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights
Challenges • Difficult technical transitions • Microphone placement] • Matching up voices/timing • Playing “catch up” • Such high demand • Re-doing theatres so they had sound capabilities • Actors had big adjustments! • Learning to act with their voice – some were criticized for their performance
But, it got better… • Technology improved • Microphones • Editing • We got better at making movies! • Opened up a new wave of talent
Talking? Let’s sing, too! • Musical films and singing/dancing in films became popular • Some notable musical films: • Singin’ in the Rain (1952) • The Wizard of Oz (1939) • Annie (1982) • The Music Man (1962) • The Sound of Music (1965)
