ENVIRONMENT • During the past decade the political and economic situation has been very difficult. • The war resulted in an enormous brain drain • This was, and still is, a very difficult period and in particular for women who have been carrying a heavy burden in their personal and family lives. • These facts have also had an impact in relation to the Digital Divide and Access to Information.   6. “EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES”HOW WE STARTED? • ITU Task Force on Gender Issues-TFGI • Panel Discussion “Women and Telecommunications” (ITU, Ministry, Private Sector, Civil Society) • Federal Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications established YU-TFGI • The main objectives of YU TFGI are related to the mainstreaming of gender issues in the telecom sector policy REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

  7. GENDER AWARENESS • An active involvement of policy-makers & decision-makers helped to raise awareness and it was widely supported by the President of the National Parliament, Prof. Micunovic, and the Federal Ministry of Traffic and Telecommunications. REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

SECOND STORY: ”It is possible, but not worth any effort” LESSONS LEARNED: • Do have an independent account from the Ministry • Do not be discouraged with lack of interest from international organizations in the country • Determine who the computers are for and how they will be used REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

SECOND STORY: ”It is possible, but not worth any effort” WE WANTED MORE!!! • FOUR WOMEN DECIDED TO REGISTER A NON GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION AND CONTINUE ACTIVITIES BASED ON FRAMEWORKS OF: • YU-TFGI, • ITU-D WGGI AND • WSIS GENDER CAUCUS • NGO REGISTERED JUNE 2002 REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

  14. OUR MISSION • TO FACILITATE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES IN ICT • TO EMPOWER WOMEN THROUGH USE OF ICT • TO SHORTEN THE GAP BETWEEN WOMEN LIVING IN URBAN AND WOMEN LIVING IN RURAL AREAS REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

GOVERNMENT PRIVATE SECTOR NGO TRI-PARTNERSHIP: PRIVATE SECTOR • PRIVATE SECTOR-COMPANIES FROM ICT SECTOR • TELEKOM SRBIJA, ERICSSON, MOBTEL, EUNET, TELEGROUP….. • DONATION OF PCs FOR e-WEC (20) • FINANCIAL SUPPORT • DONATION OF PCs FOR RURAL SCHOOLS • PROMOTION OF GENDER POLICY IN THEIR ORGANIZATIONS REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

  19. WHAT DOES THE PRIVATE SECTOR GAIN? • Private sector is represented by info-communication operators, service providers, vendors • New customers • Help in gender mainstreaming their business policies • Greater out-reach in society REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

PROJECT: “EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES ICT CENTER e-WEC” • OBJECTIVES: • To create fixed and mobile educational centers for women • To develop and increase the educational level of women trainers in using ICT • To reduce the gap between rural and urban women in the use of ICT. REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT

  22. e-WEC - MODULE 1 DEVELOPED AND CARRIED OUT • SCOPE: • To organize specialized five-day courses to train trainers • To develop appropriate reading material that facilitates the learning process; tailored for beginners and user friendly • To develop interactive self-learning tools. • RESULTS SINCE DECEMBER 2003: • 170 trainers certified(women teachers from rural areas, young mothers from “Mother’s house” instructors and their students from “Orphans house”) • OUR BUDGET was 30 000 Euro REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND ICT
