In the Odyssey of the Mind . . . *Students develop team-building skills by working in groups of as many as seven students per team. * Students learn to examine problems and to identify the real challenge without limiting the possible solutions and their potential success. * The creative-thinking process is nurtured and developed as a problem-solving tool. * Students of all types will find something that will appeal to them. * The fun of participation leads to an elevated interest in regular classroom curricula. * Teachers have a program to further provide students with a well-rounded education.

  3. Odyssey of the Mind Problems The problems are designed for competition, with scoring components and limitations, or rules to be followed. The long-term problems change every year. They fall into five general categories. These are mechanical/vehicle, technical performance, classics, structure and performance. Mechanical/Vehicle Teams design, build and operate vehicles of various size and with various power sources. Sometimes they drive the vehicles, and sometimes the vehicles perform tasks, such as overcoming obstacles or visiting other "countries" to retrieve artifacts. Classics The theme of this problem is based on the classical -- from literature to architecture to art. Whether it's writing an additional chapter to Moby Dick or bringing paintings to life, it's always a terrific learning experience. Performance In this problem, teams present performances that revolve around a specific theme and incorporate required elements. Past themes include "morphing" objects, animals that express human emotions, and originating folktales. Structure Teams design and build structures, using only balsa wood and glue. They test them by supporting and holding as much weight as possible -- sometimes more than a thousand pounds! Teams usually present a skit as part of the Style presentation. Technical Performance Teams make innovative contraptions and incorporate artistic elements into their solutions. They might be asked to write an original musical score to play on a "new" type of instrument, or to build a robot with human characteristics, or to perform tasks using a chain reaction of snapping mousetraps.

  4. Practices will be held every Tuesday. They will begin directly after school. Students will be dismissed from class to come to my classroom (room 108) unless they are afterschool students in which case they must first sign in with afterschool. I will take attendance and the students may have a snack if they desire. Once the coaches are present we will break up into teams and begin practicing. Practice will be over no later than 3:30 as of right now. If practice is to last longer or is to be cancelled or changed to a different day advanced notice will be given. Coaches need to be at the school by 2:30. Students will be dismissed at the back doors by the bus ramp. They must be signed out by someone who has previously been approved by the parents or guardians of the student. If the student is to be released back to afterschool they will need to sign themselves out and will then be released to go to afterschool.

  5. There is a $25.00 participation fee. Please make all checks out to FLES and be sure to include a phone number. This covers a team t-shirt as well as membership fees that we have to pay to the Odyssey of the Mind Organization. There will be no additional fees that I will ask parents to pay. Each student will however be responsible for making their own costume. That being said, they are encouraged to make their costumes from “junk” items and they should stay very low cost. I will also be selling chicken biscuits, writing, some grants, and a few others things to try to raise money for the program. Any help that parents can provide is appreciated but not required. No child will be penalized for inability to pay.
