Preview-Motivation Defeating Senioritis one day at a time
Today • Focus on previewing motivation: • - What does motivation mean in the world of Psychology? • - How does motivation affect me (a MCHS JR-SR?) • Project Presentations: We will finish presentations on Wednesday.
Hook: Motivation • What motivation can be? • Motivational heroes • Motivation in Psychology.
Motivation • Take a minute, and define motivation and YOUR own words.
Psychology def. of Motivation • A need or desire that energizes and directs behavior. • What does that mean? • List some examples.
Unit Focus • Is Motivation an intrinsic or extrinsic motivator in human beings?
Intrinsic Motivation • Motivation driven from internal forces. • EXAMPLES: • Participating in a sport because you find the activity enjoyable • Solving a word puzzle because you find the challenge fun and interesting • Playing a game because you find it exciting • In each of these instances, the person's behavior is motivated by an internal desire to participate in an activity for its own sake
Extrinsic Motivation • Motivation driven to please others. • Studying because you want to get a good grade • Cleaning your room to avoid being reprimanded by your parents • Participating in a sport in order to win awards • Competing in a contest in order to win a scholarship • In each of these examples, the behavior is motivated by a desire to gain a reward or avoid a negative outcome in order to please others.
Needs and Wants • I need oxygen • - Something that is physically needed for homeostasis. • I want a hamburger from Cookout • - Something that is desired by the individual but not needed for homeostasis.
Biological Motives • Needs acquired through physiological requirements for survival. • Water • Food • O2 • Sleep
Social Motives • Acquired through learning and experience. • Social bonds (friends, significant others) • The need to excel • Authority • Fun and relaxation
Incentive Theory • We obtain goals on the basis of some sort of reward. • If I get an A in Mr. Waters class, I will receive more KEES money. • If I work hard at work, I may get a promotion. • But what happens towards the tail end of your school and or work career?
Senioritis • The laziness of seniors that comes about towards the end of their Sr year because they are all-knowing and powerful Wizards of Ozzes. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeq7nxfEBfQ
