Molecules, Compounds, Bond Formation, and Roles of electrons By, Sessilie, Megan, and Mae
Molecules • If 2 of the SAME atoms of that same element bond, an element is produced into a molecule. • Example: • (H= hydrogen)
Compounds • When 2 or more of DIFFERENT types of atoms combine, its called a… “molecule of a compound” Example: CH4= Methane
Compounds • Molecule of methane= compound • Molecule of hydrogen gas= non-compound (called molecular hydrogen) • Important: Compounds ALWAYS have properties quite DIFFERENT from the atoms it is made from. • Without analyzing a compound chemically, it would almost be impossible to know what atoms make it up.
Videos about Molecules and Compounds • molecules and compounds demonstration video • Atoms are bonding song
Bond Formation • Important: a chemical bond is not an actual physical structure. • But it is an energy relationship that involves interactions between the electrons of the reacting atoms.
Role of electrons • Electrons occupy generally on fixed regions of the space around the nucleus called the “electron shells” or energy levels. • Maximum number of electron shells in an atom: 7 • from the nucleus outward. • This is until they find an atom with more than 7.
Role of electrons CONECTION! • Its life starts out like a baby’s life starts out! • It spends its infant and toddler years mostly at home and is shaped and molded by ideas and demands of its parents. • As they get older, they are shaped by others around them.
