  8. Building Schedule • Bell rings at 8:00 • Tardy bell is at 8:05 • Bus bell rings at 3:15 • Walkers/Pick up at 3:20 • Please drop off and pick up on the south side of 6th street

Reading and Writing • Reading groups are at your student’s instructional level • Centers and Read to Self • Spelling • Pre-test on Mondays, post test on Fridays • Vocabulary consists of two words each week to be written in a detailed sentence • http://www.spellingcity.com/Misspaul5 • DLR is done on own and together, graded once a week • Comprehension quizzes are given once a week • 6 Traits of Writing • Weekly reading homework • Fluency and accuracy check done quarterly

Daily Reading • “Average minutes per day reading books was the best predictor of reading comprehension, vocabulary size and gains in reading achievement between the second and fifth grades.” (Becoming a Nation of Readers, U.S. Department of Education Commission on Reading, 1988) • “Research shows that the amount of leisure time spent reading is directly related to children’s reading comprehension, the size of their vocabularies, and the gains in their reading ability.” (What Works: Research About Teaching and Learning, William John Bennett and Dana B. Ciccone, 1996)

  11. Math • DPP is done on own and together • Practice math facts • Weekly math homework in addition to other assignments • Labs that tie in with science • Assessments at the end of each lab

  14. Testing • AIMSWeb testing 3 times per year for reading • MAPS very soon • Kansas Reading Assessment-February • Kansas Math Assessment-April • Local Writing Assessment-April/May

  15. Homework • Weekly math homework • Reading 20 minutes a day • Parents should initial calendar each night • Study spelling words • Weekly reading passage • Will need to be signed as well • Other assignments may given in addition to those above.

  18. Be Successful! • Math Practice: Students need to complete their weekly math skills practice. Other ways to practice: flash cards (can be found online also), math websites, etc. • Daily Reading: Your child needs to read for 20 minutes a night at least 5 nights each week. This time could be spent reading a book from school. Parents will need to sign the reading section in the agenda each night this is completed. Minutes will then need to be totaled at the end of the month. • Spelling/Vocabulary: Encourage your child to practice his/her weekly spelling and vocabulary words. (students will have a printout of this, it will be posted on blog, and spellingcity.com) • Assessments: Help your child prepare for assessments. (Study guides and pretests may be sent home at times to help with this preparation. If you have any questions about tests, please contact me.) • Stay involved and remember that we are a team!
