Why have we started? • We feel concern for the educated society • We go for competitive Lithuania in EU and the whole world • Encourage Internet usage – encourage the development of the economy • We want to decrease the growing digital divide in the society • We seek for mutual cooperation between business, governmental and other institutions encouraging society to use IT

Goal - to achieve EU’s average Internet penetration in Lithuania within three years Window to the Future is a Society modernization initiative launched by private companies and focused on the promotion of the Internet usage in Lithuania Mission To promote the use of internet in Lithuania and in this way stimulate the growth of the standard of living, as well as Lithuania’s competetive ability among European and World countries.

  7. Lithuanian Government Joined the Alliance It is only co-ordinated efforts of business and the government that can create a synergy effect, which will help to change the situation substantially. Cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Interior to increase the number of W2F public internet access points Agreement with the Ministry of Education on cooperation in organizing large-scale internet trainings.

  9. Fields of Activities since 2002 • Access • Internet access for all layers of the society • Training Educating society and training people in using computers and the Internet • E-Content Encouragement to develop and use electronic content and services relevant to the society

  10. In 3 years 175 Public Internet Access Points are opened

What is a “Langas į ateitį” PIAP? • 2-3-4 PCs with Internet access located in local government offices,libraries,community centers,museums, hospitals, post offices, sale points SIMAS • The PIAP provides free Internet access to the visitors • The PIAP is likely to be a key institution for the local rural community • The PIAP (and/or local government) is responsible for the expenses to run the PIAP (premises, part of an Internet monthly fee, staff) • Main activities: Information search,e mail for communication,PIAP is used for local community purposes (OSF, EU projects); computer literacy courses; LIBIS – library info search; games

  21. Computer Literacy Basics to the Lithuanian e-Citizen • Project duration- 27 months • Project value – 8,4 mil. Lt • Project geography – all municipalities • Project goal – 50 000 adults trained • Training Programme–corresponds to the General Computer Literacy Standard and goes with e-Citizen program

  22. The Rolling Snowball Model: From Idea to Massive Movement Even very strong business enterprises alone are not capable of essentially changing the situation in Lithuania. Central and local government institutions, businesses and foreign funds to support this initiative will help to change the situation substantially
