Epidemiology • Prevalent throughout the world • More focused in under developed or overcrowded countries • China • Africa • One of the many reasons why people must be vaccinated ahead of time
Routes of Infection • Hepatitis A • Eat or drink anything contaminated by stool of the infected or in contact with stool or blood of the infected • Hepatitis B • Blood transfusions, direct blood contact with infected, tattoo that was applied with unsterile materials, shared personal items • Hepatitis C (Including Non A and Non B) • Same as those of Hepatitis B, also includes those who have been on long term kidney dialysis
Methods of Human Resistance • Being a viral infection, best thing to do is be vaccinated • Receive titers and checkups and make sure vaccination is up to date. • While this doesn’t completely eliminate the chance of infection, it surely helps prevent a lot of cases
Clinical Symptoms • Hepatitis A • Dark urine, fatigue, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, pale or clay colored stool, jaundice(yellow skin) • Hepatitis B • Same as Hepatitis A, but could also include muscle and joint aches • Hepatitis C(along with Non A and Non B) • Same as A and B, but could also include swelling and pain in the abdomen
Methods of Treatment • Plenty of bed rest, lots of fluids, and eat healthy foods • Antiviral Medications such as Ribavirin to combat the viral infetctions • No real specific treatment, body must combat it • Worst cases involve liver transplant of damaged or infected liver
