What should a R&D based ASE model look like? 1. How should a R&D based ASE model perform towards industry and businesses (I&B) and what demands would I&B pose towards the ASE model? ASE offering to the industry: An organizational setup that must facilitate close industrial-academic liaison on all professional levels. Direct win for each partner. Students with applied engineering focus, must understand the Engineering students thinking in innovation, how to create new products and solutions to real-life engineering problems Engineers thinking in business and entrepreneurship (targets like IPR, product prototypes, start-ups etc.) The Industry sets the following requirements to ASE: Enough engineers. Student from ASE must be at least as qualified as those from other Danish and international institutions, who they well be working with in the industry. This goes for all levels (Diploma, MSC. & Ph.D.). Students on all levels must be used to working in a dynamic, quickly changing environment. Key competence is the ability to adjust and become an expert i a new field, in gaining new competences.
What should a R&D based ASE model look like? 2. What are the challenges for an advanced problem oriented research concerning the interplay between Pasteur & Bohr? Sometimes there is quite a step from basic research (even brilliant) to the solving the real-life problem. How do you ensure focus on the entire link ? Typically no one are good at all of this. Get the right brilliant researcher. Brilliant people doing basic research might not be driven (entirely) by the desire of focusing the research towards the ”applied” world.
3. What are the challenges for an advanced customer oriented development given the interplay between Pasteur & Edison? Defining ”What is level of development ?”. This is not clear today as is the case with research. Produce real innovation that can produce products and jobs Create a setup where the industry meets the right academia and vise versa in an environment that enables them to speak the same language. Ex. : SME’s need help in large technology jump, ASE can be an excellent partner. What should a R&D based ASE model look like?
What should a R&D based ASE model look like? 4. What is the interaction between Bohr, Pasteur & Edison from a ASE R&D perspective – and how should ASE benefit from this interaction? R&D become a fundamental part of ASE education. From 6/7 th semester the …… For diploma student the involvement will be more development oriented. This gradually changes towards more research oriented competences initially through the Master degree studies. On the Ph.D. level most of the activities are research oriented.
A model for CASE ? • Facilitate skills/matchmaking • Meeting place for ideas • Time for research and Development • Too much educational workload (Education vs. R&D) • Base-funding: 25 % (reduce workload or get funding) • CASE: • Requires industry involvement and ownership • Supports both diploma and civil • Both long term and short term contracts • Should be a legal entity • A board with academics and stakeholders AU IHA D R ASE CASE Industry
What should a R&D based ASE model look like? 5. Formulate (at least) the 3 most important goals for the ASE’s R&D model in the upcoming 2 years Rank goals according to importance 1. Create an organizational setup that can make ASE R&D operational in what is called CASE (Center for Applied Science and Engineering). Create the CASE R&D strategy (all ways: What is research ambition ? What is development ambition ?, How do we organize the cooperation between R&D projects and studies ? etc.). Clear yearly targets and follow-up on these. Motivate at least 1/3 of the employee's in ASE to be involved in R&D on all levels. Integrate experiences and competences from CASE into the teaching/studies 50% of the total funding comes from the industry/business. One key research area should be world class. Make 5 patents and 3 start-ups in a 5 year time-span. Given your goals – which important tasks should be solved within the next year? Secure the 25% base funding. How should we do it? Selecting ambitious industrial and other partners for political lobbying. How should we organize and coordinate this? Any recommendations or good pieces of advice …?
