Why Chew Gum? • We actually have a natural desire to chew gum. • Chewing resin (which is like tree sap) off of trees was actually an ancient habit. • In 1848, John Curtis of Hampden, Maine had seen loggers chewing the resin and decided to produce a money marketing product, which we call “Gum”.
The Invention of Gum • How did he make gum? • boiled it • skimmed it • poured it • cooled it • rolled it • cut it • dusted it with cornstarch • wrapped it • He called it “State of Maine Spruce Gum”. • Other companies started to copy this idea, sending “State of Maine Spruce Gum” into failure.
So We Can Swallow Gum? • Gum might not stay in your system, but it doesn’t mean it won’t be hazardous to your health. • regularly swallowing gum can cause gastrointestinal blockages. • a couple cases involving children: • two of the children became sick, as the gum balled into a "taffy like" group that required removal • a girl just a year and a half old swallowed four coins, but before she swallowed those had swallowed chewing gum and they were found lodged in her esophagus, fused into a single blob.
So Basically… • Chewing gum won’t stick around for seven years, so it’s okay to swallow it every once in awhile. • Swallowing it can be a hazard to you if you swallow it too often, or to much.
