Strategies • Mental maths is a process which involves calculating an exact answer in your head. • It is important that children are taught a variety of strategies which can be applied to solve calculations mentally. • Through the development and increase in confidence of applying strategies which have been taught pupils will feel more equipped for solving problems and calculations mentally.
How did you do it? • Use the whiteboards and pens provided to calculate the answer to this question mentally. Write your answer on the whiteboard. 46+29
Strategies that we use in Class 2 We use a variety of strategies in Class 2 which children are introduced to from EARLY level. The main ones which can be applied to all calculations involving the 4 operation are: • Partitioning (ability to split a number) • Rounding and Adjusting • Looking for complements
Looking for Complements • Pupils develop the ability to recognise and recall complements of larger numbers. They use their knowledge of complements to 10 to help them do this as they know 6+4=10 • They then extend this to complements of 100 e.g. 60 + 40 =100. • And again for complements to 1000 e.g. 600+400=1000. • Pupils are encouraged to use their knowledge of complements to recognise patterns which can help them solve calculations.
Have a Go! • Use what you already know about 3 X 4 to help you calculate 30 X 4. • How did you solve it?
What is Partitioning? • Partitioning is the ability to split a number to make a calculation more manageable to complete mentally. • We can use partitioning to solve 76 X 4. 70 4 4
Have a Go! • Use what you know about partitioning to help you solve these: 24 X 6 136 + 242
Rounding and Adjusting • This is a very useful strategy for pupils to learn and apply to help them solve mental calculations. • For example to solve 237 + 48 • Round 48 to 50 and add it to 237 to give 287 then because you have rounded a number up by 2 you must take the 2 back off to give 285. +50 - 2 237 287 285
Rounding and Adjusting for Multiplication • To solve 78 X 6 you can use rounding and adjusting. 78 X 6 =(80 X 6) – (2 X 6) = 480 – 12 = 468
Try These • 36 X 8 • 346 + 73 • 367 X 4 Explain what strategy you used to the people at your table.
