The Globe theatre was built around 1598 by Shakespeare’s company in the Bankside district of London. • It was one of four prominent theatres in the area, with the Swan, the Rose, and the Hope. • In 1597, though the company owned the theatre in technicality, their lease on the land expired, and their landlord, Giles Allen, wanted to tear it down.
Then, on the night of December 28, when Allen was out of town, a party of workmen assembled at the theatre and dismantled it. They then proceeded to transport all the materials across the Thames river to the Bankside district, where they began using the materials to construct the globe. • Allen was shocked and furious when he returned and sued them for damages. The courts decided against Allen and ordered him to desist from any further lawsuits.
