Developing the Complete Engineer Forty’ fying The AL R05 Conference Walton Hall 23/05/09 Michael Hush Engineering Programme Director & Staff Tutor R09 Kath Clay AL R05 & R09) & COLMSCT Teaching Fellow
Aims: (What) • To attain awareness of: • The Engineering Pathway in the OU. • Competencies and Learning Outcomes (LOs) within the UK-SPEC. • New initiatives: • OU Engineering Subject Group • East Midlands • Have opportunity to examine selected LOs and explore methods of supporting students during own tutoring.
How? • Engineering Pathways in the OU (Michael) • UK Spec Competencies & Learning Outcomes (LO) (Kath) • Group Work: LOs and Tutoring (All) • Ongoing developments supporting the Engineering Pathway (Inside the OU & East Midlands externally)(Kath & Michael)
The engineering programme aims to… … provide any person joining the OU with a means of gaining the academic qualifications needed to become a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer No it’s more than that! Sounds like a mission statement
United Kingdom Standard for Professional Engineering Competence UK-SPEC
What is Professional Competence? • Integrationof: • Knowledge • Understanding • Skills • Values (More than the ability to perform specific tasks) • Needs to be demonstrated by an Engineer individually …..’by virtue of education, training & experience….’(UK-SPEC (2008)).
Helping Develop Competence • Encompassed in academic courses by LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO)(education & experience). • UK-SPEC* has generic LOs for accredited or recognised courses. *The Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes, 2008 ECuk • Students need to compile EVIDENCE to demonstrate their attainment of competence.
Helping Develop the Complete Engineer • OU courses have learning outcomes (LOs). • Can we link our course LOs to UK-SPEC LOs? • How can we encourage the student to recognise these and gather evidence? • Student evidence gathering should be continuous activity throughout their OU experience. (Undergraduate students should have T191 as primer)
Group Exercise • ‘How Can I promote student awareness & recognition of (UKSPEC) LOs within my tutoring activities?’ • (Subsidiary, individual question) ‘How do the LO’s link directly to my course?’ LOs to be considered for both activities: GT1 and S1 to S5. TIME: 20 (25) mins + 10 (5)mins feedback..
Developments Supporting the Engineering Pathway • Recruiting Students, in the East MidlandsLifelong Learning Network (LLN) • LEAP AHEAD (www.leapahead.ac.uk) Learners Employers And Providers Advancing Higher Education Accessibility & Delivery. WHAT & WHY: Mission- to increase participation in vocational Higher Education in the key economic sectors. Engineering one of 5 sectors. WHO: Partnership of HEI, FE Colleges, Industry Training Organisations & employers - supported by Regional Development Agencies (OU (East Midlands) is a partner)
LEAP AHEAD & the OU in the EM • HOW • ENGINEERING PROGRESSION AGREEMENT commitment* • Agreement between colleges and universities to provide learners with a clearer route into and through vocational education. • Agreement intends to deliver and increase in the number of learners progressing into and through Higher Education from vocational pathways (remove ambiguity and develop commonality). • OU Engineering Progression Champion: Keith McGraw (klm2@tutor.open.ac.uk) • * Many other activities supported by LEAP AHEAD programme (managed by the University of Derby).
Developments Supporting the Engineering Pathway • Retaining & Supporting Students in the OU. • Engineering Pilot Student Support Programme. (Student Support Review Implementation).Status- Active • COLMSCT Project ‘Engaging Students in and Engineering Community’. Status -Action Research
COLMSCT Project: 1. Historical poor engagement of Engineering student in voluntary e- participation. 2 Such contact, communication & support mainly bound by course duration and subject: not sustained or supported beyond a course presentation. • More global Engineering Subject community development, without such boundaries. Action research to explore 1 and then develop model for 3. Contact Kath Clay(kc58@tutor.open.ac.uk) Developing an additional resource for enhanced Student Support (more support strands than existing Engineering website http://engineering.open.ac.uk)
Feedback: • Usefulness • Achieved Aims? • Any areas requiring further info.
