TEXT: Luke 7:19-20; John 8 The nature and attributes of the second person of the Trinity, God the Son, is dealt with in the question of John the Baptist, “Are you the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” The answer Jesus gives is a statement of Who He is:
He is the Creator • He has power over His creation • The prophecy of Isaiah 35:5 is fulfilled in the evidence of that power • The blind see (John 9:1-34) • The deaf hear (Mark 7:32-37) • The dumb speak (Mark 9:17ff) • The lame walk (Matt 15:30; John 5:2ff) • And beyond that to life itself (Luke 8:41-56; John 11:1ff)
B. He was not created Himself but is the pre-existent One (John 1:1ff) C. Even though He took on human form, He is still the Eternal One (Col 1:15-17) D. Thus, as the Creator, as God the Son, He has all the attributes of God.
II. He is The Messenger of God • In the OT the “angel of Jehovah” was the Second Person of the Trinity • This is not, as some teach, that He was not God, but He was the Person of the Trinity designated to be the Messenger (Gen 32:30) cf. visible rays • He is God’s complete message (Heb 1:1-2)
III. He is the Judge of all the earth • This is the role of the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son (John 5:22) • All believers will stand before Him to give account (1 Cor 3:11ff; 2 Cor 5:10) • All unbelievers will stand before Him to receive their just reward (Rev 20:11ff) • There will be no excuse (Rom 3:19)
